The cost of assisted living is much lower in the nearby central Texas city of San Antonio ($3,957). It’s also less costly in coastal cities such as Houston ($3,863) and Corpus Christi ($2,975). The most affordable assisted living costs are found in El Paso ($2,250), where seniors pay less than half the amount of their counterparts in Cedar Park.

Optional State Supplementation
Seniors who receive Supplemental Security Income from the federal government may be eligible for a monthly top-up payment from the state of Texas. This optional state supplementation may be used toward assisted living room-and-board costs.
The maximum OSS payment for a single senior is $60 per month. Couples who’ve lived in assisted living for more than 30 days are treated as individuals and can receive up to $60 each.

Community Care for the Aged and Disabled
The Community Care for the Aged and Disabled program helps seniors who aren’t self-sufficient avoid nursing home placement. The program covers a variety of home and community-based services, including 24-hour residential care in a licensed assisted living facility.
Seniors who qualify for SSI or Medicaid meet the program’s income requirements. They must also have less than $5,000 in countable resources ($6,000 for couples), which include cash, money market funds, saving certificates, tax refunds and insurance settlements. Some assets are exempt, such as a senior’s primary residence and one car.
