I visited this facility

I visited Lewisville Estates is quite close to my house. It has been kept up quite well, it does not have the nursing home spell. I used to be a director of business development for assisted living myself, so I knew those type. I also talked to the regional manager for that company, on the business development side, and that was positive, too. We checked out two rooms, one was too small. It is not so much as the size, my mother is 104 years old and had collected a lot of stuff and she needs a storage area. We can work around the other one. They had given me a sheet that listed out all the activities. I am finding using nursing homes quite nebulous, a lot of them are cutting back on their activities because of COVID, but they still had enough to keep my mom satisified because she is the life of the party. She is as alert as most ladies. They also have a place to get her hair fixed.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother has a small two-bedroom apartment at Elmcroft of Vista Ridge. It doesn't have storage. The staff has been very polite and caring. She liked some of their food. They have a salon, transportation, and an activities director. The dining room looks elegant.

We chose Lewisville Estates for my father-in-law. It is an independent living that we were able to get more assistance rather than assisted living. There was a one-bedroom and a studio, and he chose the one-bedroom, both of which were very nice and very workable. He's been there a week and we've been happy. They're just missing dominoes, which is his interest. The dining area is clean and bright, and the menu choices are very good. They have a library that has a lot of books available, a nice garden courtyard, and a laundry room. The staff has been helpful. He seems very happy with the food, and it looked good. It's very clean, very tidy, has nice furniture, and is well maintained. It's a little higher than we'd like to pay, but it seems to be a decent value for this area.

I visited this facility

Lewisville Estates was fantastic, and the prices were right. It's a well-kept place. It's large for assisted living, and I was very impressed with it. They furnish the meals at the assisted living side. The staff was lovely, kind, and sweet. The people were happy and smiling and talking. It was a very pleasant place to be. There were people doing different things in the recreational areas. The food was a little hard to eat.

Brookdale Lewisville seemed nice. The amenities were nice. They have a library too. They were having a birthday party when we were there, so it seemed like there was a lot of socializing going on between the people. The staff seemed nice. The nurses and the sales managers were very nice. It seemed like the nurse was on top of things and runs a tight shift, which I liked. The place itself was nice, but it was small and a little older. The rooms looked nice, but they were small too. I didn't like that they had a very guarded door that you have to be led in and out of. The parking was not good.

I visited this facility

Lewisville Estates seemed to have a lot of activities. The building was great. They have a separate memory care area that you can transition to. It is a separate building, but it is right there. The staff was excellent. However, the location was not right for us. If it was closer, I would have chosen that place.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Lewisville

Medicaid in Texas

In Texas, Medicaid is available as a public health-insurance option to children and their caregivers, seniors and people with disabilities who meet the following income and asset requirements:

  • Income under $2,303 per month or under $4,626 per month for married couples
  • Less than $2,000, or $3,000 for married couples, in countable assets, including cash, savings and bonds

Medicaid benefits include doctor’s visits, hospitalization, dental care, prescription drugs and, for those who qualify, long-term services.

Seniors and those with disabilities may be able to participate in one of the following Medicaid options:

1. The Medicaid for long-term care program is for seniors over age 65 or those with a disability lasting 12 months or more. Participants must use their own money (excluding a small amount to cover personal needs) to pay a portion of the cost and may receive services such as nursing home care, at-home care or residence in a facility for people with mental illness or intellectual disabilities.

2. People who are working, have a disability and don’t live full-time in a care facility may be able to make monthly payments to receive Medicaid services through the Medicaid Buy-in program.

3. People who receive Supplemental Security Income qualify for Medicaid.

While Medicaid does not directly cover assisted living in Texas, certain individuals may qualify for the STAR+PLUS waiver.

STAR+PLUS Home and Community-Based Services Waiver

Lewisville residents who are 65 years and older or disabled may qualify for assisted living services through the STAR+PLUS Medicaid waiver program. To qualify, interested applicants must be eligible for Medicaid and meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • Be able to receive STAR+PLUS HCBS but not receiving Supplemental Security Income
  • Receive SSI benefits and meet the Medicaid low-income requirements
  • Qualify for Medicaid through a Social Security exclusion program
  • Receive Medicaid while living in a nursing home or through the Medicaid for Breast and Cervical Cancer program

STAR+PLUS services include assisted living, medical supplies, nursing and personal assistance services, therapies, respite and transitional assistance. These services are provided through one of two health plans available to Denton County residents: Amerigroup and HealthSpring.

Medicaid participants who qualify for the waiver receive an enrollment packet in the mail and should select their desired health plan, complete the enrollment form and mail it back within 30 days of receipt.

Lewisville residents can apply for Medicaid benefits online or call (877) 541-7905.

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living

Community Care for Aged/Disabled

Texas’ Health and Human Services department administers the CCAD program to help seniors and people with disabilities live in the community rather than in nursing homes. It provides personal care services and assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing and eating to individuals residing in foster homes, assisted living facilities or their own residence. To qualify, enrollees must have income below $2,250 (individuals) or $4,500 (married couples) and assets below $5,000 (individuals) or $6,000 (married couples). Seniors can apply by emailing the North Central Texas Aging and Disability Resource Center at [email protected] or calling (855) 937-2372 for more information.

Veterans Aid and Attendance

Veterans Aid and Attendance is a national program of financial assistance on top of monthly pensions to veterans who earn below $22,577 (individuals) or $26,765 (if married or caring for a dependent) in annual income. Surviving spouses may also qualify if they earn below $14,529 with total assets totalling no more than $126,000, excluding homes and vehicles but including annual income. These additional monthly payments help recipients who are bedridden, live in a nursing facility, are legally blind or require a full-time caregiver pay for assistance with activities of daily living, such as eating, toileting and bathing.

To qualify, applicants must already receive or be eligible to receive a VA pension. Lewisville residents can apply by visiting their nearest benefits office or sending evidence of their assistance needs and reports of daily habits to their regional pension management center.
