I Visited This Community

Silverado Beach Cities was very nice. I just felt like there were a lot of people per floor. It had a beautiful view of the ocean. Outside, it looked like a medical building but on the inside, it looked different. They had technical nurses able to provide medication. They had a lot of involved nurses and doctors. I didn't taste the food, but I have heard that everything is very good but obviously more expensive. It was nice. They were very welcoming and tried to work with us in trying to figure out what would be the best thing for Mom.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Redondo Beach

Medicaid in California

In California, Medicaid is known as Medi-Cal. It’s available to low-income Californians, including families with children, pregnant women, disabled people and senior citizens. Medi-Cal is administered by the state and operates within parameters set forth by the federal government. The program is jointly funded by both parties.

The services covered by Medi-Cal are vast but may include physician services, inpatient and outpatient hospital care, laboratory tests, nursing home care and prescription medications. For those residing in assisted living facilities, additional Medi-Cal funding can be obtained through the Assisted Living waiver, which is detailed below.

To qualify for the state Medi-Cal plan as an elderly person, applicants need to be at least 65 years of age and meet the following financial requirements:

  • Individuals may have a maximum income of $1,242 per month and up to $2,000 in countable assets
  • Married couples applying together may have a maximum income of $1,682 per month and up to $3,000 in countable assets

Exemptions include the applicant’s home, provided they or their spouse continue to live in it, as well as one vehicle and personal belongings, such as household furnishings and clothing.

To apply for the state Medi-Cal plan, seniors can fill out on application online or call Covered California at (800) 300-1506 for assistance.

Assisted Living Waiver

Low-income senior citizens or disabled persons who require care in an assisted living facility may qualify to have the cost of their care covered under the Assisted Living waiver. In addition to the cost of assisted living care, this waiver also covers other services, such as care coordination and transitional services for those who are moving from a nursing home into an assisted living facility. Unfortunately, the waiver doesn’t cover the cost of room and board.

To qualify for the Assisted Living waiver, seniors must require assistance with at least two activities of daily living, including bathing, dressing, eating or toileting. Additionally, applicants must be financially eligible for Medi-Cal.

To apply for this waiver, seniors can contact Access TLC Home Health Care at (800) 852-9887 or a Care Coordinator Agency in the Los Angeles County.

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living

State Supplemental Payment

Senior citizens who receive the federal Supplemental Security Income benefit may be eligible for an additional payment from the state. The State Supplemental Payment is available to seniors and disabled persons with little to no income who require additional financial assistance to pay for expenses, such as room and board, which aren’t covered by the state Medicaid plan or any of its waivers.

The amount of the benefit depends on the recipient’s living situation and current income. Some individuals may receive as much as $423.37 per month, while married couples may receive double that amount in some cases.

All senior citizens who are Medicaid eligible are qualified to receive the SSP. To apply or learn more, seniors can call the LA County Social Security Administration office at (800) 772-1213.

Veterans Aid and Attendance Pension Benefit

The Aid and Attendance benefit is available to veterans who actively served during a wartime period and their living spouses. It helps pay for the cost of long-term care when seniors are unable to care for their daily personal needs without assistance. The benefit is added to the beneficiary’s monthly pension and available to those receiving care at home as well as those residing in an assisted living or nursing care facility.

To qualify, the applicant must be a U.S. veteran or spouse and fall under one of the following categories:

  • Have corrected eyesight in both eyes; vision must be 5/200 or worse
  • Require daily assistance with ADLs
  • Be bedridden because of a chronic illness or disability
  • Reside in a nursing care facility
  • Live with a concentric contraction to five or fewer degrees of their visual field

  • This program is not available to veterans who already receive VA disability benefits.

For more information or assistance with the application, seniors can call the Veterans Affairs Department at (865) 594-6158. To apply, seniors living in California can write or fax the St. Paul VA Regional Office at:
