If I could give this facility no stars I would, It is a great concept and looks inviting but this is a house of horrors! The following happened to my mother the first and only month she was there. The ED and owner are not in this business for your family member. Issues that have occurred at Sonoma House Assisted living my mother who does NOT have dementia or Alzheimer’s. First night - mother left on floor for 45 minutes. Caretaker came in stepped over her to turn off the TV and left with my mother still on the floor. My mother was overdosed with Hydrocodone as she was given another resident's medication twice. My mother was there a month and her room was never cleaned. They rarely have activities, although they list them on a board. The activity director quit two weeks into our stay and had not been replaced when we left. They provided my mother with a wheelchair and the brakes did not work causing 2 falls. My mother was taken to the bathroom and then helped to stand at the sink to brush her teeth. The caretaker left her standing there and she cannot stand for more than a minute on her own. The walker was too far away for her to reach it and she had to yell for help. Fortunately, someone came before she fell. My mother has peripheral neuropathy, which causes her skin to burn and itch. Any clothes that are remotely tight are painful for her to wear. I made SH very aware about this before we moved her in. I was told that she could wear appropriate, nice terry cloth or velour robes to eat in the dining room, considering her medical condition. That person no longer works there. After that person left, the ED said my mother must dress for every meal or she could not come to the table. My mother does not have the strength to get dressed and undressed three times a day. In addition, it is painful to wear those types of clothes. They were going to start charging me $7.50 for each meal they brought to her room. The ED would not allow me to talk to other residents or their families. The caretakers are responsible for all the residents, cooking and cleaning (but they only clean the common areas). These other responsibilities take away from the care they should be giving to the residents. They are allowed two 15 unpaid minute breaks and on their 30-miunute unpaid lunch break they are not allowed to leave the campus. There should be a designated cook and housekeeper. The caretakers are so busy cooking and cleaning that they cannot give the care needed to the residents. My mother needed to go the doctor and she was refused transportation. I approached the ED about these issues and never received a formal response. After expressing my concerns, I received a termination letter that they were evicting my mother.
Sonoma House is a beautiful cozy community. This community is modern with beautiful colors and designs. Every part of this community is like home. The cozy feel and open floor plan assist the residents with enjoying their freedom. The staff are very hands on and are able to manage care better than a larger community. The food service is perfect and individualized. The wellness programs and activities are kind of similar because the activities are therapeutic and stimulating. The residents are happy and enjoy the outside garden. The residents are encouraged in regards to care, nutrition and with activities.
