I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother moved into Stratford Commons. I didn't like that I couldn't go in and tour the place, but that's because of COVID. I liked the fact that they took me on a virtual tour and the gentleman that did it was very good at his job. He pointed out a lot of positive things about Stratford, including the fact that they have no deficiencies in a certain month, just recently like November or something like that, and I thought that was something good to know. They also told me that they have special Alzheimer's training. His whole presentation impressed me. We looked at a lot of other places in the same way and I went with my gut feeling, which was "that's a great place." My mom has an Alexa device in her room, so we communicated that way, and then we had to take her for a doctor's visit last week, so we got to be with her for a little bit. She has dementia, so that has its challenges. She's doing OK. So far, I feel comfortable with it. They've called me about a couple of issues, and I've been able to call the director of nursing about a couple of issues, and we've communicated well. I'm feeling good about it. I wish I could get in there and be with her, but I can't. I understand that they're making a structure to allow residents to visit with their relatives. They're building a special room that will have some kind of a divider in it. I'm anxious for that to get finished so we can go inside. They allow window visits, but it's a little chilly for that now. They're doing construction work, so they're a little torn up, but it's gonna be great when it's done. It's expensive, but they all are expensive. They have a hair salon, but we've not used it. I've only been in the main lobby.

I visited this facility

Brookdale Overland Park 119th was very nice. I saw one apartment; it was fine. They have a variety of activities, but it was lunchtime when I went so everybody was having lunch. The dining area was nice. They have an exercise room, a TV room, and an outdoor pool.

My father is in Brookdale Overland Park 119th. It's excellent. We love it, and he loves it. His final apartment won't be ready for another week, but the temporary facility is great, very clean, and very tidy. They're taking great care of him, and he's very pleased with the food. There's a bike trail, so he's going to go out biking tomorrow. He's very happy about that. They have a pool, a little pub, and sports viewing parties.

I visited this facility

My tour at Brookdale Overland Park 119th was interesting. The place was very busy. I got there at lunch time so everybody was eating lunch and people were milling around. My comment about them is that they look outdated. The décor was nice and probably ten years ago it was great, but it looked out of touch with the contemporary colors and schemes. For that reason, I wouldn't have stayed there. The staff is very nice. They're very accommodating, pleasant, and so forth. The landscape is quite mature since it's quite an older community. I felt like there were a lot of units there since there are a lot of buildings sprawled around. They had a swimming pool, and a big common area with lots of rooms for reserving special parties, arts and crafts, and a library. They had all the necessary things and it was quite adequate. The décor made it sound like it couldn't be that clean; there's too much filigree and so on.

My parents chose Tallgrass Creek. We liked the atmosphere and all the activities they offered as well as the in-house doctor. They had cards, games, swimming, exercise classes, outings, and happy hour. The staff was extremely welcoming, friendly and helpful. There's a pool, a beauty salon, and a library.

I visited this facility

It was very good. They treated us very well and they were very attentive to our needs. The accommodations were nice and we enjoyed them. The food was good, but the service in the cafeteria needs improvement. Overall, the nursing staff and everything else were good. They had a good list of activities available.

I am a current client of this provider

We chose Right at Home for Mom because they were absolutely adorable, very thoughtful, and answered all our questions. The girl that they sent is the most adorable sweet thing on the planet and we love her. She helps my mom with her meals, she bathes her, she helps with fixing her hair, and she paints her fingernails. She does her medications, helps her with pretty much everything, reads to her, and takes her for walks out on the deck. They're wonderful. They've checked in several times to see how things are going. They wanted to try somebody else and we said no because we love our little gal and we're happy with her.

I visited this facility

We visited Park Meadows, and it was nice enough if we needed that type of care, but we don’t feel like we do just yet. The staff was very pleasant and very helpful. The grounds appear to be in good shape, not really eye appealing, but clean and neat. The location is OK, and it’s close to almost everything. It’s like a single small home, it has a living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and it’s fairly small. I would recommend it if I knew anybody who needed it.

We chose Morningside Place for my sister because it's a memory care facility, it's not real large, and they seemed to have good help there. The rooms and bath were light and clean. It's very close to her husband, so he can visit her often. If there is anything that we wished were a little different, we just talk to them and they correct it. She is doing well there. He's happy with it and she seems to be doing fine. The director, the second director, the salesperson, and the activities director have been very good about contacting us and making sure that we're happy, and that everything goes the way it should. We're very happy with the place so far. They have a beauty shop and she gets her hair colored and her hair and nails done. They have all kinds of activities there. She loves the sing-alongs and anything that has to do with music. Her room is beautiful and the bathroom is beautiful. The place is very light and airy. They seem like a very warm and caring facility and they try their best to make the resident and the family members happy. They have outdoor facilities where people can sit and talk on benches, and where flowers are planted. There was no urine smell.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Overland Park

Medicaid in Kansas

KanCare is Kansas’ state Medicaid program. It provides a variety of health care services to low-income residents of Kansas, including families, seniors and individuals with specific illnesses, such as breast cancer, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. Services covered by KanCare include doctor visits and medical treatment, dental care, physical therapy, counseling and prescription medications.

KanCare’s standard state plan provides financial assistance with the cost of assisted living in some cases. While this coverage is generally only available to those in nursing homes, KanCare will cover assisted living costs for seniors in long-term care facilities who receive a high level of care.

KanCare programs are funded by the state and must adhere to parameters that are determined by the federal government. KanCare provides free access to healthcare for elderly applicants with incomes of $62 per month or less. Those with incomes higher than $62 may be eligible for subsidized care which is determined by a sliding scale and based on income. KanCare’s spend-down program allows participants to pay for medical expenses before considering their subsidy amount. Applicants may not have more than $2,000 in countable assets.

To apply for KanCare’s standard state plan, seniors can contact (800) 792-4884.

Home and Community-Based Services Frail Elderly Waiver

KanCare’s HCBS Frail Elderly waiver was created to reduce the number of seniors who require care in the state’s nursing home facilities. It does so by providing additional care to those who live at home or in assisted living facilities. Services that are provided through this waiver include supervision and support services, dental hygiene care, nurse visits and financial management services.

To qualify for the Frail Elderly Waiver, seniors are required to be 65 years of age or above and may not have an income above $747 per month. Asset limitations are the same as those for the state KanCare program. Seniors are also required to undergo a comprehensive care assessment to determine their level of need.

To apply for the HCBS Frail Elderly Waiver, seniors can call (855) 200-2372.

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living

Kansas Optional State Supplement

The Optional State Supplement is available to seniors and disabled individuals who reside in a long-term care facility or receive home care services. It’s a cash benefit that’s meant to assist its recipients with costs that aren’t covered by Medicaid such as room and board. The amount of the benefit is based on the applicant’s income and living arrangements.

To qualify for the supplement as an elderly individual, seniors must be 65 years of age or older and receiving the federal Supplemental Security Income benefit. Those who qualify for the optional state supplement are automatically qualified for KanCare coverage as well.

To apply, seniors can visit the Lenexa Social Security Office at 1537 95th Street Lenexa, Kansas or call (800) 772-1213.

Long Term Care Insurance from LifeSecure Insurance Company

In Kansas, LifeSecure Insurance Company offers long-term care insurance plans to those who wish to prepare for the future. Plans must be purchased before the need for long-term care arises. Premiums, co-pay amounts and deductibles often vary, so for further information, it’s best to contact LifeSecure at (877) 720-2165.

Life Insurance Cash-In

Seniors who own a life insurance policy may be able to cash it in to receive the funds they require for long-term care. When cashing in life insurance, there’s usually a financial penalty that needs to be paid by the policyholder. It’s important to consider that cashing in a life insurance policy renders it void, so it’s usually a good idea to explore other options first.
