I have lived in Johnson County all my life and have multiple friends who live or have lived at Greenwood Village South over the years and have so many great things to say. I have already done my research and know this is where ill be calling home when I\'m ready to downsize.

I visited this facility

Oh, my list is very long. Starting with letting people sit in urine and feces to not bringing medication for nausea until an hour after it’s asked for. Also the fact that a nurse tells me she’s going to go look for a personal item that went missing when they switched my mom to a new room and never returned. Then a second nurse just nods her head and mumbles as she walks away and never returns as well. This facility is a complete joke and all talk. Smiling to somebody’s face and saying that things will be taken care of is one thing. Action and actually taking care of some thing is a totally opposite thing! Completely saddens me that some people are just in it for the paycheck and don’t care about anything else.

Heritage Place Assisted Living was really good, and it was just almost identical to where mom currently is. It was very clean. The lady who took us on a tour was very friendly and really helpful. At that time we were still thinking of putting her in a studio apartment. They showed us where they have the activity room, and they have games, puzzles, and cards.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother moved into Stratford Commons. I didn't like that I couldn't go in and tour the place, but that's because of COVID. I liked the fact that they took me on a virtual tour and the gentleman that did it was very good at his job. He pointed out a lot of positive things about Stratford, including the fact that they have no deficiencies in a certain month, just recently like November or something like that, and I thought that was something good to know. They also told me that they have special Alzheimer's training. His whole presentation impressed me. We looked at a lot of other places in the same way and I went with my gut feeling, which was "that's a great place." My mom has an Alexa device in her room, so we communicated that way, and then we had to take her for a doctor's visit last week, so we got to be with her for a little bit. She has dementia, so that has its challenges. She's doing OK. So far, I feel comfortable with it. They've called me about a couple of issues, and I've been able to call the director of nursing about a couple of issues, and we've communicated well. I'm feeling good about it. I wish I could get in there and be with her, but I can't. I understand that they're making a structure to allow residents to visit with their relatives. They're building a special room that will have some kind of a divider in it. I'm anxious for that to get finished so we can go inside. They allow window visits, but it's a little chilly for that now. They're doing construction work, so they're a little torn up, but it's gonna be great when it's done. It's expensive, but they all are expensive. They have a hair salon, but we've not used it. I've only been in the main lobby.

I liked Keystone Place at Forevergreen better than others, but it was a lot bigger and sometimes that's not always a good thing. It was a very nice facility, and the rooms were really nice. They had a lot of activities. If it was your mom's birthday, you could reserve a private dining room and have your family come in. They had a chef there, and they had all types of different things for them to order. Right outside the dining area was a puzzle room. They had a lady in there that did crafts with them. They also had a bar where they did happy hour, and you could go out on the deck. They had another deck where you can grill out, a putting green, and a salon. The staff was great. I got to meet a lot of people, and they were all really nice and friendly.

The staff at Greenwood Terrace Lenexa is extremely patient and extremely helpful with my dad. They just really helped him when he first moved in, they went and picked his dog up, and got him a bed because he didn't have anything. They were able to find furniture for him and really helped him. My dad eats in his room. I just know that they're good to my dad.

Walden Place is just independent living, and if you need assisted care you contract your own help. It's a wonderful community, it's very clean and very pleasant. My mom who didn't want to go at all loved it there. She said that the staff and the people were very warm and helpful. She loved the food and loved the activities. She likes to do the exercise every day after breakfast. They have a fun bean bag baseball, social things that she really likes and musical groups would come in. She really likes their library where she can go and read newspapers, they also have a salon where she can get her hair done. She's a catholic and they offer mass in their chapel once a month. So far it's been great.

We (my siblings, mother and I) chose Santa Fe Trails over several other facilities for our mother two years ago, for several reasons. Initial conversations with the Director were very helpful and encouraging, answering all our questions and giving us things to think about. After a complimentary lunch and tour, we all were impressed with the interior of the building, with its warm and welcoming feel of home right away. Our mother has been a resident over two years now, and our family appreciates the care and attention she receives from the staff members. The employees make a valiant effort to make life safe, meaningful and pleasant for all the residents at Santa Fe Trails. Overall, Santa Fe is a lovely, comfortable, clean, inspirational, fun, creative and safe place for our mother, and we highly recommend to others. It has been a joy to make new friends with residents and their families.

Care Cost Comparison

The type of senior care is generally the biggest factor in determining cost. In Johnson County, the average monthly cost of assisted living is more than $1,500 higher than the average cost of in-home care. However, when including other costs associated with staying in the home, such as rent, utilities and groceries — all of which are typically included in the cost of assisted living — the cost of continuing to live at home becomes considerably higher. Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Johnson County

Medicaid in Kansas

In Kansas, the state Medicaid program is called KanCare. It provides low-income residents with low- or no-cost access to necessary health care, including doctors visits, dental care, prescription medications, hospital treatments, laboratory tests and other treatments or therapies. KanCare programs are administered by the state of Kansas and must adhere to parameters set forth by the federal government.

Seniors who reside in assisted living facilities may be eligible for financial assistance under the state KanCare program, which covers up to $2,250 per month for nursing care costs, provided they are receiving a higher level of services and require a nursing level of care.

To qualify for KanCare, applicants with incomes less than $62 per month are eligible to have the full cost of health care services covered by the state while those with higher incomes may receive subsidized care. KanCare has spend-down provisions for participants that allow them to use their income to pay for medical expenses first and report the remainder of their cash to KanCare to increase their coverage. Asset limitations state that applicants may not own more than $2,000 in countable assets.

To apply for KanCare, seniors can call (800) 792-4884.

Home and Community-Based Services Frail Elderly Waiver

The HCBS Frail Elderly Waiver provides seniors who require a nursing level of care with supportive services that include assisted living/personal care services, dental hygiene care, medication reminders, nurse visits and financial management services. The program’s mandate is to decrease the number of seniors residing in nursing care facilities by providing additional services to those living at home or in assisted living facilities.

To be eligible for the Frail Elderly Waiver, seniors must be aged 65 or older and their income must be less than $747 per month. They must undergo a comprehensive care assessment to determine their level of need and must meet the financial eligibility requirements for KanCare.

To apply for this waiver, seniors can call (855) 200-2372.

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living

Kansas Optional State Supplement

Kansas provides those in long-term care who receive Supplemental Security Income with a state supplement. This cash benefit can help pay for costs that aren’t covered by KanCare, such as room and board. The state determines the payout amount based on the applicant’s living arrangement and income.

To be eligible for OSS, seniors must be 65 years of age or older and receiving SSI.

To apply for the benefit, seniors can visit the Lenexa Social Security Office at 1537 95th Street in Lexena, Kansas, or call (800) 772-1213.

Elderlife Financial Loans

Elderlife provides seniors with an alternative payment option when they’re ineligible for state financial assistance. An Elderlife bridge loan is paid directly to the senior’s place of residence and repaid by the senior in monthly installments. Elderlife loans are available at low interest rates and flexible terms.

Qualifying for a loan requires a good credit history and enough income to cover the monthly payments. Seniors who are unable to qualify on their own may apply with up to six cosigners, which may increase the chances of approval and reduce monthly payments.

Seniors can apply for an Elderlife loan online or call (888) 228-4500.

Life Insurance Policy Conversion/Life Insurance Cash-In

Seniors with life insurance policies can convert their policy into cash to pay for assisted living. When converting a life insurance policy, seniors typically receive between 20 and 40 percent of the policy’s face value in cash to pay for their long-term care while the remainder transfers to beneficiaries at the end of life.

Alternatively, seniors can cash their policy in full. There is usually a small financial penalty, and after it’s cashed, the policy is considered null and void.
