The gal that gave us a tour at Prestige Assisted Living at Henderson was excellent. However, there was an odor in the memory care, and the carpeting was really stained. She said they would be changing all that to tile, which would be more sanitary. I did not care for this facility, although the staff was very nice.

They’re significantly lower than the comparatively sized city of Reno ($4,000) and much smaller community of Carson City ($4,500). Henderson is the least costly metro area in Nevada and is also less expensive than metro areas in neighboring states, including St. George, Utah ($3,500), and Lake Havasu City, Arizona ($3,500).
Note: Senior care cost data wasn’t available for Henderson, so data for the closest city, Las Vegas, was used.
The Cost of Assisted Living in Surrounding Areas
The most important factor influencing the cost of senior care is the type needed. In Henderson, the cost of skilled nursing care in a semiprivate room is more than double the cost of assisted living. Home health aides are nearly $1,000 more per month than assisted living, and homemaker services are only slightly less. In-home care doesn’t include living expenses, such as rent and utilities, while residential care usually does. When considering what kind of care is least expensive, it’s essential to look at the costs of remaining in the home versus moving to a residential facility.

Medicaid in Nevada is a joint federal and state program managed by the Department of Health and Human Services, and it provides health insurance for low-income Nevada residents. It pays for services that include prescriptions, dental care, durable medical equipment, hospice care, emergency room visits, skilled nursing care, transportation, preventative screenings and physical therapy. Some services may require a copayment.
To be eligible, participants must:

The Assisted Living waiver program provides financial assistance to Nevada seniors who require skilled nursing care but prefer to receive that care in an assisted living environment. It offers participants services that include case management and assistance with daily living activities, such as bathing, dressing, grooming and eating. To participate in the waiver, applicants must:

Federal assistance programs such as Medicaid provide help paying for care in assisted living facilities; however, residents are typically responsible for paying room-and-board costs themselves. Seniors who need assistance affording these expenses can apply for OSS.
Nevada provides Optional State Supplementation to all SSI recipients who are elderly or blind; it’s an increase to the monthly SSI payment received at the beginning of the month.
To qualify, an applicant’s monthly income must be no more than the SSI benefit limit of $771 for an individual or $1,157 per couple. They must also have assets worth no more than $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple.
Seniors may be eligible to receive up to $391 per month if single and $881 per month for a couple, depending on their income.

Seniors and their families who need immediate funds to make care arrangements can apply for a bridge loan through Elderlife Financial Services. These loans are useful to applicants who are waiting for the sale of a home or waiting for benefits to become available. Approval depends on credit eligibility, but up to six co-applicants can be named for one loan, making individual credit scores less important in the approval process.
The funds from Elderlife loans can be sent directly to an assisted living facility to pay for care costs. Elderlife typically requires information on the source of anticipated funding, but approval can be fast, sometimes within 24 hours.
Contact Elderlife Financial Services at (888) 228-4500 for more information.
