I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Staff seemed inconvenienced and rude to visitors. One staff member “vented” outside to a licensed therapist there to provide services for my husband. Loud music one Sunday to the point where the caregiver on duty could not hear the doorbell. This is an Alzheimer’s/Dementia licensed home. Their license should be pulled for sheer disregard and unprofessional conduct.

I am/was a resident of this facility

can't say enough good things about the managers and staff here; they and the residents are wonderful caring people. I moved here14 months ago with my wife who was suffering from Alzheimer's disease. I was 85 and she was 80. I was able to be her caregiver in a nice 1 bedroom apartment for 12 months with minimal staff assistance and we both enjoyed 3 meals a day in the dining room, a wide choice of age-appropriate activities, and the ambience of an older resort hotel... not a sterile institutional setting like most of the licensed Residential Community For the Elderly that I had investigated. Just 8 weeks ago she qualified for Hospice Care here in a Memory Care room. She received excellent care there for the last two months of her life and I was able to visit her whenever I wanted to. She died 10 days ago. I plan to stay in our apartment and continue to enjoy this lifestyle for as long as I can.

My mom has been a resident of LaVida for a few years. During Covid last year when everything shut down the Director addressed the issues very clearly and according to CDC and state guidelines and kept us informed via phone and mail messages. The caregivers and all the staff have been amazing prior and during Covid. When we could only see mom through the window the caregivers and staff were fantastic in answering all of our questions and concerns. I really appreciate the loving care mom receives. All staff should receive 5 stars!

I moved my mom to Meridian at Laguna Hills, and I think they are awesome with their 24-hour service. It is luxury senior living. It has got everything that someone would need. They have a restaurant, a pool, and 24-hour care. They have nursing facilities and they have housekeeping. They have everything. My mom does not like the food. It is just healthy food, and they are not going to over season it. It's a place where they have long term living, so she is not gonna get high sodium or greasy food. For me the food is very good. They have daily activities every kind of activity. It depends on the month. They have fitness coaches and dance classes. They have hiking groups, theater, and live music. They even take you to a casino once in a month and offer transportation for nearby places.

Excellence was a top-star place. We loved it. My sister was there for over a year. I picked a big place on the second floor for her. There was plenty of room for a love seat, a couch, or a TV. It had a beautiful walk-in bathroom and a little kitchenette. The price was less than the other facility, and I have to say everyone was top notch. The room was bigger than a studio, and it had two big windows that overlooked a gazebo where they could go outside and sit. They had barbecues on Fridays before COVID. They kept them all active with things to do. If you called, there was always somebody there who could tell you what was going on. We went there all the time because it was easy. They had a movie room, a computer room, a hairdresser, and a beauty shop right in the place, and they had a doctor. Everything was there. For the price, you won't believe what you get. If we called them, we could go there and have lunch. The day we went there, they didn't expect us, but when we sat down for lunch, they had cheesesteak, and they even ended up with cheesecake for dessert. The place was nice, and they had two big seating rooms downstairs, which were gorgeous. A piano player would come in, and they could go sit down on the couches. Excellence was over the top. They provide meals, they wash their clothes, and they bring them back. They are hung back up, and they aren't left in the hamper. My sister-in-law's clothes were always put back for her. They cleaned every week, everything was spotless, and they kept everything so nice.

I adore this property, it is conveniently located and has spacious walking grounds. It has a more intimate feel which seemed right for my loved one as a large, bustling community can be too overwhelming for someone with dementia.

I visited this facility

I went to Pacifica Senior Living Newport Mesa. The director was very nice, but it was not the right fit for my mom. I think the residents there were a little bit past where my mom is, and I feel it was too small. It was too old and too small. I wanted her to have more space; it felt kind of cramped. I felt the facilities needed to be better kept. It was also very loud outside; it was next to the freeway. I also think the food is probably terrible. They have a walking area outside, but there were no flowers and no umbrellas. It's there, but it's not maintained; it could be a little bit better.

My parents are at the Excellence Senior Living - Orlando. I like all the personal care and everything they do for them. They have nothing to worry about. They have good food. The staff are very accommodating. The care is very nice, very excellent. I need to make phone calls for Medicaid because it is pretty expensive. They take my dad to dialysis every day or three times a week.

Aside from geographic location, prices vary widely based on the level of care that seniors require. Assisted living facilities typically offer the best overall value for comprehensive care and housing, but there are alternatives. Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Orange County

Medicaid in Orange County

Medi-Cal is California’s Medicaid system. This state and federally funded health insurance program is available to low-income adults, seniors and disabled individuals in Orange County. It covers the cost of medical care, including hospital stays, doctor’s visits, prescription medications and skilled nursing services. It may also help with the cost of assisted living and home-based services using federally authorized waivers created under the Social Security Act.

To qualify for Income-Based or Aged & Disabled Medi-Cal, the applicant’s household income must be at or below 138 percent of the Federal Poverty Level, which is $16,395 per year for individuals and $22,108 for couples. Orange County residents who are aged, blind or disabled but aren’t financially eligible may qualify for the Medically Needy Medi-Cal cost-sharing program, which requires members to use some of their own money for health care. To apply for Medi-Cal benefits, call the Orange County Social Services Agency at (800) 281-9799.

Assisted Living Waivers

Assisted Living Waivers are an extension of California’s Medicaid program that’s available to current Medi-Cal members. They pay for the cost of personal assistance provided in residential care facilities. However, they do not cover the cost of room and board. ALWs include three connected services:

    • Transition benefitsto help nursing home residents return to the community or move into an assisted living facility

To qualify for any of these waiver services, adults in Orange County must be enrolled in Medi-Cal and have medical needs similar to most nursing home patients. Because this is a 1915(c) program that covers optional non-Medicaid services, the state processes a large number of applications. There is an enrollment cap, and most new applicants are added to a waiting list.

Medi-Cal members cannot apply for these benefits directly. Referrals are submitted through Care Coordination Agencies that assess candidates individually. The Department of Health Care Services maintains a full list of CCAs that serve Orange County.
