Washington Oakes was a beautiful place, but I don't think that is a place for me. I met a lot of people, but I didn't feel like there was enough of the people who live there that were walking around or out and about. I just felt like maybe people stay in their rooms a lot now, especially for the virus. I think everybody cannot be milling around very much. I didn't feel like there was a lot of social things going on, and that's what I need. I need some socialization. The staff was excellent, and she took us around the whole place. We were there for almost two hours. They had exercise rooms, a gym, a big room that you can use for weddings and so forth, and there was storage for each person outside their own rooms. The dining room was beautiful, and the menu looked wonderful. I didn't feel like there was enough of an outside area where you would think that people would be going to sit outside, because it was a sunny day, but maybe they cannot do face-to-face because of the virus. It was very nice and very clean, and the rooms were beautiful, and a lot of them had windows that you could actually look out somewhere else, even though I would still like an outside area where you can meet people besides the dining room. Everybody was great. The food was excellent. I was so amazed with the food. I think I'd like to live there just to eat, and they had a wonderful chef. It was well laid out and the hallways were all connected. Because there's more than one building, you can walk from one to the other. The elevators were excellent and clean.

Our tour at Washington Oakes was fine. It was professional and knowledgeable. The place was beautiful and immaculate. It's a good location in a very walkable neighborhood. The community is large; there three large buildings. The rooms are clean. It's classy and very nice. It's overall very positive, but it's just too big, too confusing, and too overwhelming for my dad. It would have been where I chose to live if it had been up to me.

My husband and I are at Aegis of Lynnwood. So far, so good. My husband says he's comfortable except for lockdown. We can't get out and go in the community without going back into quarantine, and it's more due to the COVID thing than anything else. We have a one-bedroom apartment with outdoor access and a patio. The staff is pretty good. The food is well planned, well cooked, and very good. We have various activities and I attend some of them, but not all. They try very hard for us.

It was very nice. The people were very helpful, giving advice even if it was just in general, beyond placing my mother there. The whole experience was very good. We saw two apartments, one was respite care because we had talked about having Mom go there for a while. It probably had the most realistic furniture in respite care. The other one was a model, and there was a lot of space for a studio. The particular one we saw had its own balcony, so that was very nice. I saw an outside area, which was average compared to other places I've seen. It was nice, but some places have more of a garden feel. This one was more like a patio. It's in a very urban area off of Highway 99.

It has been great. My father really likes it. I have no complaints. His room is just a studio with a little kitchenette, a counter with a sink, a place for a microwave, ample closet space, and an enclosed patio. They have a full calendar of activities. The staff is very professional, attentive, and helpful. I have no problems. It is independent living, although they have caregivers on-staff that help with medication, bathing, and whatever they need. They have a little chapel, laundry facilities, a movie area where they have a big screen TV with couches, and a library.

Brookdale Silver Lake is wonderful. My husband's room is clean, warm and nice. He's out with everybody and they're keeping him busy. The staff is very good and they all seem to like working. The food is pretty good. They have a town square where they meet a couple times a day and they have television rooms. They have dining rooms and there were four persons to a table. They take them out on outings.

Brookdale Arbor Place is a beautiful facility and the rooms were very nice. The amenities were nice and they have a great menu. They just really went above and beyond as far as going out and visiting my dad. It's in a great location and it's right by a major store and medical facility. The rooms were very nice, updated, and clean. They had a lot of activities like men's group, card groups, and movie nights. The staff I interacted with was wonderful.

Brookdale Arbor Place is OK. There's plenty to do. There's all kinds of get-togethers and clubs. The food is OK. There's usually several choices and you just pick and choose what you want. They're very accommodating so we're getting along just fine with the food situation. They're very friendly and helpful here. They come and check on me and make sure I'm doing OK. Sometimes I just think the staff is overly cautious to make sure that everything is going good for me. The food is kind of blah since there are a lot of diabetics who live here, so the lack of seasoning is getting kind of hard to get used to, but there's salt, pepper, ketchup, and mustard on the table. The servers don't judge you if you want an extra helping and they just jump right to it. I've got a nice, big studio which is very roomy. My daughter has furnished it with a few things like a new dresser, a book case, a table, TV with cable and VCR, microwave, refrigerator, and toaster, so it's very homey. I'm very comfortable here and I've got everything that I need. They have bingo, craft classes, pinochle, card games, singalongs, guests who perform like hula dancers and a jazz band, and movie nights. They have outings on a bus if you're capable of going out. They give you a sheet to tell you what they're doing every day, and there's usually five or six items that you can join in on, so you don't have to sit in your room and be a wallflower. They have a room with puzzles set up, and you can go in any time and work on a puzzle or do word games. There are nurses to dispense meds if you need it. They do my laundry once a week, help me with two showers a week, and housekeeping comes and vacuums and cleans the toilet, and that's all included in the price.

My dad is at Grandview Village. One of the reasons my dad really likes the place is that everything is at ground level, so there are no stairs or elevators. He was also fortunate enough to be able to get into a corner unit. It's pretty good so far. He's been having meals brought to him, which is one of the services that they provide. It costs a little bit extra, but he appreciates that. It allow him to have some privacy, which is something he really wants since he's not as social as the others. Every interaction I've had with them has been really great. The people remember my dad and always have something to tell me about him. They always give me an update on how he's doing. The food is not the greatest in the world since it's institutionalized. Sometimes the options are just not that great. The facilities are always really clean. They've got a beautiful garden courtyard and my dad loves his corner unit. It's a good sized unit. It's beautiful and I really like it there. They have a podiatrist that comes in every month. My dad also enjoys music night when a choir comes in and sings. They have a lot of stuff going on. The price is pretty reasonable and competitive. For what they offer, it's a pretty good value.
According to Genworth’s 2018 Cost of Care study, assisted living costs in Snohomish County ($5,125) are comparable to the state average of $5,135 but considerably more expensive than the national average ($4,000). Costs here are the third highest in the state, topped by only the Bremerton area ($5,720) and Seattle ($5,750). The smaller city of Walla Walla is close behind at $4,950. Spokane ($4,000) and Wenatchee ($4,125) are exceptions to the high statewide cost trend.
Note: Senior care cost data wasn’t available for Snohomish County, so data for the closest city, Mount Vernon, was used.
When considering senior care options, it’s important to weigh factors that influence cost such as the level of care and included services. In Snohomish County, homemaker services and home health aides cost significantly more per month than assisted living ($700). These types of care don’t include rent, home maintenance or food. Nursing home care is the most expensive option, with an average monthly cost about 75% higher than assisted living and in-home services.
Medicaid, the national health care program for low-income Americans of all ages, is available to eligible Snohomish County seniors. Called Apple Health, the program is administered by the Washington Department of Social and Health Services.
Adults age 64 or younger are eligible for Medicaid if they have a yearly income of $17,232 or less ($23,340 for couples) and are U.S. citizens and Washington state residents.
Seniors age 65 and older may qualify for the Aged, Blind or Disabled Medicaid category, which has a lower income limit of $771 per month ($1,157 for couples). Income from all sources counts, including wages, alimony, IRA payments, SSI and SSDI benefits.
According to the American Council on Aging, both age groups are limited to $2,000 or less in assets ($3,000 for couples). A number of assets are disregarded, including burial trusts, furniture, personal effects, one vehicle and a primary residence valued at $585,000 or less.
To apply for Apple Health coverage, call (877) 501-2233 or visit the Washington Connection.
In Snohomish County, seniors eligible for Apple Health coverage who wish to reside in an assisted living facility may qualify for one of four service packages:
