Washington Oakes was a beautiful place, but I don't think that is a place for me. I met a lot of people, but I didn't feel like there was enough of the people who live there that were walking around or out and about. I just felt like maybe people stay in their rooms a lot now, especially for the virus. I think everybody cannot be milling around very much. I didn't feel like there was a lot of social things going on, and that's what I need. I need some socialization. The staff was excellent, and she took us around the whole place. We were there for almost two hours. They had exercise rooms, a gym, a big room that you can use for weddings and so forth, and there was storage for each person outside their own rooms. The dining room was beautiful, and the menu looked wonderful. I didn't feel like there was enough of an outside area where you would think that people would be going to sit outside, because it was a sunny day, but maybe they cannot do face-to-face because of the virus. It was very nice and very clean, and the rooms were beautiful, and a lot of them had windows that you could actually look out somewhere else, even though I would still like an outside area where you can meet people besides the dining room. Everybody was great. The food was excellent. I was so amazed with the food. I think I'd like to live there just to eat, and they had a wonderful chef. It was well laid out and the hallways were all connected. Because there's more than one building, you can walk from one to the other. The elevators were excellent and clean.

Our tour at Washington Oakes was fine. It was professional and knowledgeable. The place was beautiful and immaculate. It's a good location in a very walkable neighborhood. The community is large; there three large buildings. The rooms are clean. It's classy and very nice. It's overall very positive, but it's just too big, too confusing, and too overwhelming for my dad. It would have been where I chose to live if it had been up to me.

It has been great. My father really likes it. I have no complaints. His room is just a studio with a little kitchenette, a counter with a sink, a place for a microwave, ample closet space, and an enclosed patio. They have a full calendar of activities. The staff is very professional, attentive, and helpful. I have no problems. It is independent living, although they have caregivers on-staff that help with medication, bathing, and whatever they need. They have a little chapel, laundry facilities, a movie area where they have a big screen TV with couches, and a library.

Brookdale Silver Lake is wonderful. My husband's room is clean, warm and nice. He's out with everybody and they're keeping him busy. The staff is very good and they all seem to like working. The food is pretty good. They have a town square where they meet a couple times a day and they have television rooms. They have dining rooms and there were four persons to a table. They take them out on outings.

Brookdale Arbor Place is a beautiful facility and the rooms were very nice. The amenities were nice and they have a great menu. They just really went above and beyond as far as going out and visiting my dad. It's in a great location and it's right by a major store and medical facility. The rooms were very nice, updated, and clean. They had a lot of activities like men's group, card groups, and movie nights. The staff I interacted with was wonderful.

Brookdale Arbor Place is OK. There's plenty to do. There's all kinds of get-togethers and clubs. The food is OK. There's usually several choices and you just pick and choose what you want. They're very accommodating so we're getting along just fine with the food situation. They're very friendly and helpful here. They come and check on me and make sure I'm doing OK. Sometimes I just think the staff is overly cautious to make sure that everything is going good for me. The food is kind of blah since there are a lot of diabetics who live here, so the lack of seasoning is getting kind of hard to get used to, but there's salt, pepper, ketchup, and mustard on the table. The servers don't judge you if you want an extra helping and they just jump right to it. I've got a nice, big studio which is very roomy. My daughter has furnished it with a few things like a new dresser, a book case, a table, TV with cable and VCR, microwave, refrigerator, and toaster, so it's very homey. I'm very comfortable here and I've got everything that I need. They have bingo, craft classes, pinochle, card games, singalongs, guests who perform like hula dancers and a jazz band, and movie nights. They have outings on a bus if you're capable of going out. They give you a sheet to tell you what they're doing every day, and there's usually five or six items that you can join in on, so you don't have to sit in your room and be a wallflower. They have a room with puzzles set up, and you can go in any time and work on a puzzle or do word games. There are nurses to dispense meds if you need it. They do my laundry once a week, help me with two showers a week, and housekeeping comes and vacuums and cleans the toilet, and that's all included in the price.

My Dad has Vascular Dementia and my sister and I moved him into Brookdale Silver lake, thinking they would take good care of him. We were very wrong. It didn't take very long to realize that the staff is under paid, and not enough staff to take care of him. We found women's clothes belong to other residents hanging in his closet. His clothes, shoes, eye glasses, electric shaver, and other personal items would consistently go missing. His hardwood floor in his room was always sticky from urine and smelled of urine every time we visited weekly. We liked the some of the staff there, but there hands were tied because of the corporate office. It's about the bottom line with them, not the residents well being. Avoid this place, don't put your loved ones in this place. We moved our dad after 2 months, there are better places.

I have already placed my brother into Washington Oakes. It's wonderful. The staff members are very polite, very nice, and very respectful. He says the food is delicious. They have crafts, a game room, and music. They have a lot of activities. However, my brother is anti-social, so he doesn't really participate in any of them.

Washington Oakes was very nice. They had lectures and we learned a lot. We had a buffet and then we had a tour. For an older place, it's been kept up and renovated several times, so it's pretty nice. It's a huge place. We got to see all of the different kinds of rooms. We saw a studio apartment, a 1-bedroom, and a 2-bedroom. It was pretty varied and they were all very nice. It's clean and neat even on the outside, and the staff is pretty good.
According to Genworth’s 2018 Cost of Care study the average cost of assisted living in Everett is higher than both the state average of $5,135 and the national average of $4,000. Prices for assisted living are similar in nearby Bremerton ($5,720), while costs are considerably lower in Olympia ($4,250). Costs are also lower in Mount Vernon ($5,125) and Bellingham ($4,250).
Note: Senior care cost data wasn’t available for Everett, so data for the closest city, Seattle, was used.

Senior care costs are largely based on the type of care provided; however, in Everett, property values and a high government-mandated minimum wage in nearby Seattle also drive up the price of services. As with most other areas, nursing home care is the most expensive option at close to double the cost of assisted living. Homemaker and home health aide services are about $350 more expensive than assisted living, while adult day health services are the least expensive senior care option. When weighing the costs of different options, it’s important to remember that residential care services include room and board, whereas seniors who remain in their own homes will need to budget for ongoing living expenses such as property maintenance, food and utilities.

Medicaid, the nationwide health insurance program for low-income Americans, provides basic health care coverage to 22% of Washington residents through funding provided by the state and federal governments. Seniors and the disabled make up 17% of Medicaid enrollees in Washington, where the program is known as Apple Health.
All Washington residents aged 64 and under who earn less than $1,384 per month automatically qualify for up to $16,752 in health care services such as cancer screening, treatment for chronic diseases and emergency medical care.
Washington seniors age 65 and older who receive Social Security Income and earn under $771 monthly per person, or under $1,157 when applying as a couple, may qualify for no-cost Apple Health Long-Term Services under the Categorically Needy SSI Related Medical (S02) designation.
To learn more about Apple Health Long-Term Services for seniors, call the Washington Healthplanfinder at (855) 923-4633.
Community Options Program Entry System
Washington seniors who require extensive assistance with two or more activities of daily living, such as eating, bathing, toileting or taking medication, may qualify for the Community Options Program Entry System. This Medicaid Home and Community-Based waiver prevents or delays nursing home placement among Washington seniors by providing additional services and supports within an assisted living setting.
Seniors approved for the COPES program who reside in assisted living facilities must contribute towards their care costs by paying a monthly participation amount.
The amount a senior pays is based on their countable income and the services used. Costs such as a personal needs allowance, child support payments, guardianship fees and eligible medical expenses may be excluded from countable income under this program.
It’s important to note that enrollment in the COPES program is currently capped at approximately 45,000 participants statewide and projected to rise to a maximum of 56,644 participants. Seniors who qualify for COPES may be placed on a waiting list.
For more information about the COPES program, contact the Everett Community Service office of the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services at (877) 501-2233.
Supplemental Security Income – State Supplemental Payment
Seniors who receive Supplemental Security Income qualify for a cash top-up through Washington’s State Supplemental Payment Program.
Payments of $40 per month are automatically added to the federal SSI amount for Washington recipients age 65 and older.
To learn more about the Washington SSI-SSP, contact the Department of Social and Health Services at (877) 501-2233.
