Windsor House is a good fit for my mother-in-law. It's kind of a smaller home with fifty residents and thirty-eight rooms. We like the fact that they have a mixture of residents there. She can be as independent as she needs to be but also get the care that she needs. They have a doctor on call and nurses come in. They're very attentive to the residents' individual needs in terms of food and lifestyle, so to speak. She's in a single room; she has a bathroom and a living space. They allowed us to bring furniture from her home, and they provide the cable setup in her room. She doesn't have a need for a telephone but they would provide one, and I think there's an extra charge for that. She liked the fact that for the price it was all inclusive; there are not a lot of add-ons because she's on a very limited budget. They play bingo, and they have activities every single day that they can participate in as they wish. Every day they can look at the board with a list of activities available that week, and the residents are allowed to participate if they're interested. They have a library, which is good since she likes to read; they have a living room with a fireplace where they can sit and read; and they have community dining -- it's a nice setting. The activities are a little limited right now due to the COVID shutdown. The staff I've interacted with are very nice, and the layout of the place is very nice.

My father is at The Legacy at Southpointe Drive. It's been good. It's a nice place for him. The staff is great. There has been a lot of confusion financially, but mostly everything has been resolved. They feed him three meals a day, and he has his own refrigerator and groceries. He is able to snack when he wants, so it's pretty convenient. They have a fitness center, but because of COVID, they really haven't been able to get him up there yet. I would like to look into some kind of therapy or somebody who can help him with his exercises because he's not doing them. When you walk into his apartment, there is a full-sized bathroom to the left. It has a walk-in shower, which is important, because he doesn't have a lot of strength in his legs. To the right, there's a mini-kitchen, a sink, a microwave, and a full refrigerator. He has a bed on one side, his chair on the other, and a TV hookup. It's a nice place, but it's kind of expensive.

I visited this facility

We saw Windsor House just on the outside. The grounds were clean. We saw two rooms from an outside entrance. The rooms were nice and big with their own bathroom, but I think you had to bring your own furniture. One room had furnishings, the other one was empty. With the price, they should provide furnishings because it's a lot of money. I only met one person, and he was very nice. My one big concern is that these things are expensive. They're right against the road, which I don't know if that's too ideal because if somebody tried to walk out or something, they could be in big trouble. There were no gates. I think they probably should have a gate. They're right on Pelham Road, and Pelham Road is a very busy road. They had meals and activities planned, but you had to bring somebody in for care. They should have a gate going to the road, so that people couldn't walk off. The building itself was good. It's nice and clean, and there's a park that you can walk on and a lot of outdoor seating. It felt comfortable there. The only one issue I had was there should've been a gate because it's a very busy road and somebody could just walk out because the rooms had outside entrances. If you're a little confused, you can just walk off and walk out into the street.

I visited this facility

I visited Windsor House. They charge $2000 a month, and as my husband moves up a level, it does not go up, so it's a flat fee. He hasn't spent one day there yet, but his room is all setup. Everything's taken care of and I'm going to pay to hold that room. He hasn't moved in yet, but they did a fabulous job working with me. We went and stayed in a family room, and the staff took a video with his phone and we liked what we saw. They were very nice. I called several times and I've only talked to the same administrator and customer service person every day, but the med tech was the one that I spoke with during the tour. The room is 310 square feet. It's a deluxe room, and it's semi-private. I ordered everything ahead of time and it got there ahead of time. They have all kinds of activities. They have PT there and basic cable that they pay for. My husband can't operate a cellphone, but they said they probably had an old phone that they could plug up and use. They've got a pharmacy network that takes care of medications, a doctor and nurse that come in once a month and a med tech that delivers the medications. It was clean, homey, and privately owned. They were extremely nice. One of their activities was taking them out to eat. The facility was very traditional. It's not far off from the kind of home we have.

Our tour was very nice and we were impressed. The second time I visited my husband went with me and we liked it. The personnel was wonderful. They have a library, chapel, they have an exercise room, and they gave us a list of their menus.

I am a past client of this provider

This is not a good place for your loves ones. I am being nice in this review. If I could give no stars I would. This was a bad experience. My parent had to contact me to tell them to change her or get good. I don’t know if they are short staff but not a good place to go.

I visited this facility

I visited The Woodlands at Furman. It's very nice, affiliated with Furman University, and they have access to a lake, to concerts, and sporting events. The staff member was fantastic. She gave us all the information, she gave us the tour, and helped us select an apartment. It's a very small apartment, but Mother plans to move to a larger apartment if they open up. It has a beautiful kitchen with stainless appliances, and everything is new. It's a one-bedroom and it has a little patio area, living room, and kitchen that's kind of open, plus a bathroom. The dining area looked great and they seemed to have a really good program.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Greenville

Medicaid in South Carolina

South Carolina’s Medicaid program is called Healthy Connections. It’s managed by the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (SCDHHS), and it helps low-income families and individuals who are disabled or over the age of 65 receive medical care. Healthy Connections pays for some or all medical bills and can financially assist with nursing facility care. If an individual receives Social Security Income (SSI), they automatically qualify for Medicaid.

Eligibility requirements include:

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or qualified alien
  • Must reside in South Carolina
  • Must be Age 65 or older, blind or disabled
  • Must have a monthly income of $1,012 or less or an annual income of $12,140 or less (single)
  • Must have a combined monthly income of $1,372 or less or an annual income of $16,460 (couple)

It takes approximately 45 days for Healthy Connections to determine eligibility, although it may take longer for some applicant categories. Individuals will be notified when a determination has been made, and if approved, they will receive their benefits card within one week.

In addition to the Healthy Connections Medicaid program, there are also waivers to help with the costs of assisted living, but these programs are capped and individuals may be assigned to a waiting list.

The Community Choices waiver enables individuals with care requirements that qualify them for a nursing home to live at home or an assisted living facility, as long as the costs don’t exceed those of a nursing home. Family members, including adult children, are eligible to be paid to take care of their aging loved one as long as they pass the necessary background checks approved by South Carolina.

Other services offered  by this program include adult day care, home modifications, personal support and medical equipment and supplies.

To qualify for the Community Choices waiver, an individual must be:

  • A South Carolina resident
  • Age 65 and older
  • In need of a nursing home level of care
  • An applicant with an income of $2,313 or less, with countable assets of no more than $2,000 (single)
  • An applicant with a maximum combined income of $3,160.50 and countable assets of less than $2,000 (couple)

Individuals should apply to Healthy Connections Medicaid and Community Choices even if they’re unsure of eligibility but need health care or financial help. Seniors can apply online, at their local county office or call the customer service line at (888) 549-0820.

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living

Optional State Supplementation

Optional State Supplementation Program (OSS) is a state-funded program that is managed by the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (SCDHHS). This program is intended to support the health and care of seniors who reside in an assisted living facility and improve their quality of life, preventing early entry into a nursing home.

The advantages of this program is that members receive full Medicaid benefits and cash payments for room and board, along with a small allowance for personal needs.

To qualify for OSS, an individual must be a U.S. citizen or qualified alien, a resident in South Carolina, age 65 and older, a resident in an assisted living facility that is enrolled with SCDHHS and must have a monthly income that doesn’t exceed $1,456 or $2,000 in resources.

Older Americans Act in South Carolina

The Older Americans Act (OAA) is a federal program that provides funded money to designated Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) for various services to seniors living outside of nursing homes. These services include congregate meals, caregiver support, transportation, case management and assistance with senior benefit programs.

For eligibility, individuals must be age 60 and above and reside in South Carolina. Funding for OAA is limited and distributed to individuals who are prioritized as the most in need.

Elderlife Bridge Loans

Bridge loans were created to ease the gap of financial strain when transitioning into an assisted living facility while waiting on other resources to come through. Elderlife lends immediate financial support to Individuals in as little as 24 hours and pays directly to facilities or home care agencies. An adviser guides seniors through the application process and helps to determine exactly how much is needed and what the monthly payments will be.

This loan allows up to six cosigners, which lessens the need for a strong credit score from any one borrower and enables others to share the cost of paying back the loan.

To be eligible for an Elderlife bridge loan, participants must have:

  • A strong credit score (if only one person is applying)
  • An alternate funding source to pay back the loan (sale of home, veteran’s pension, etc.)
