Reviews of Assisted Living Facilities in Roswell

I visited this facility

Vickery Rose Retirement Community is less of a campus, but they've got lots of activities. They had 24-hour food available. It's a lovely place. They allowed dogs on the lower level, but they didn't have a room available at the time. My son really liked it. The staff was delightful, and the inside of the facility was absolutely lovely. I would've enjoyed living there. They've got a library, a little exercise room, and a nice theater. The staff described it as like a cruise ship, and they're pet friendly.

I visited this facility

Brookdale Historic Roswell is very nice. They have activities like bingo, and a number of other things that I'm interested in. They provide three meals a day plus snacks. They wash my clothing, and they bring me my food if I don't want to go to the dining room. I'm in the smallest unit, and there's still plenty of room. I like the hospitality, warmth, and the friendliness of everyone I've met. The staff is very accommodating.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother is at Roswell Nursing & Rehabilitation. So far, so good. I didn't get a chance to look at the calendar that they have, but they have games, board games, Bingo, and things like that. They offer three meals a day. They are helpful to her. They should improve on the way that they talk because they're a little snappy. One of the nurses called me and he was very knowledgeable of the things that I needed to know. The doctors come there, and if not, they have a van. She likes the food. The thing that bothers me is the furniture that they have in the rooms is not up to par. For example, the handles are coming off the dresser, one of the beds in the room where my mom is looks broken down, and the bedding looks outdated.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother moved into Brookdale Historic Roswell. We're very new there. I think it's great and it's perfect for my mother. The staff is very helpful, very good, and thorough, and they seem to care about the residents. I couldn't be more thrilled. The only thing that's a little bit of a negative is that my mother needs help getting up every now and then. She told me she had to wait for 30 minutes once and I didn't think that she would have to wait for more than six minutes tops. I'm not sure what happened there, but there might have been a miscommunication. Other than that, everything has been good. She loves the food there. She thinks it's great. The dining area is very nice. They have a large room to do exercises in, and they have regular exercise activities. They have a large library with a really nice open patio that looks over historic Roswell, so that's lovely.

I Am A Friend Or Relative Of A Current/Past Resident

My mother has lived in this community for a year now. It is a very old community and the common areas do need updating. They have somewhat updated the apartments which are acceptable. They offer a lot of activities to keep my mom busy if she chooses. The food is my biggest gripe. They do not have a chef on the property. The meals are very inconsistent and the portion size varies daily. Some meals are good while others are inedible. My mother no longer cooks so her main meal for the day absolutely needs to be edible. I think this property still has a lot of work to do.

We're very satisfied with Brookdale Chambrel Roswell. The staff was very adequate, and we're very pleased. My mother's room is appropriate for her care. She does not complain about the food. They have karaoke, television, and movies, and outside vendors come in and do presentations. It's a very active community.

Care Cost Comparison

The price of senior care in Roswell is directly related to the type of care needed and where it’s provided. Those who require full-time skilled nursing and round-the-clock services in a nursing home setting pay the highest monthly rates. Seniors attending an adult day health care center on a Monday-through-Friday basis pay the least, at roughly one-quarter the cost of nursing home care. In-home services provided by a homemaker or home health aide cost about $500 more per month than residential assisted living. Seniors should consider that assisted living fees usually include room and board, but rates for in-home care only cover the cost of health care services. The Genworth study’s average costs for in-home care don’t reflect the additional expenses of running a household, such as food, utilities, upkeep and rent or mortgage payments.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Roswell

Medicaid in Georgia

Low-income Americans with limited resources may be eligible for health care coverage through Medicaid. A jointly funded collaboration between the federal and individual state governments, Medicaid is the country’s largest health care program and serves more than 72 million people nationwide.

Georgia Medicaid offers coverage to eligible elderly, blind and disabled residents for medical care, long-term care in a nursing home and limited personal care services. To qualify, an applicant must be a U.S. citizen or qualified alien and aged 65 or older (or aged 64 or younger and blind or disabled). Applicants must also have a maximum monthly income of $2,313 per person and maximum assets of $2,000 for individuals or $3,000 for couples.

It’s important to note that while income from every source counts, certain assets are exempt, including a primary home valued at less than $585,000, household furnishings, personal belongings and one automobile.

Medicaid makes exceptions to these limits for married couples if only one spouse applies.

  • A non-applicant spouse’s income is exempt, and an applicant may transfer up to $3,160.50 per month to their spouse if necessary to meet the required income limit
  • A spouse remaining at home may also retain up to $126,420 of the couple’s joint assets

Those eligible for Supplemental Security Income benefits from the federal government are automatically enrolled in Georgia Medicaid and don’t need to apply. The qualifying limits for SSI are $771 in monthly income and $2,000 in assets for individuals, and married couples are limited to $1,157 in income and $3,000 in total assets.

Roswell seniors in need of medical or long-term care assistance can apply for Medicaid online or in person at the Sandy Springs’ Division of Family and Children’s Services office located at 8215 Roswell Road., suite 1100. Those who need assistance can call (877) 423-4746.

Georgia Medicaid Waiver Programs

Georgia Medicaid only covers long-term care in nursing homes. However, the program does offer two waivers that may provide assistance to seniors who wish to remain in the community instead of entering a nursing home.

To qualify, seniors must meet the Medicaid eligibility requirements and be assessed as requiring a nursing facility level of care.

The Community Care Services program is administered by local Area Agencies on Aging. The agency assigns a care coordinator to assess an applicant’s needs in cooperation with their doctor. The coordinator then arranges and oversees the delivery of appropriate services. Available services and supports include personal care assistance and supervision provided in a licensed alternative living setting, such as an assisted living facility.

The Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment program provides those who qualify with primary medical care and long-term care services in a community setting. Program enrollees are assessed, and a personalized care plan is developed to meet their particular needs. Covered services may include case management, personal supports and assisted living care.

Since the Medicaid waivers, CCSP and SOURCE, are not entitlements, approved seniors may be placed on a waiting list for services due to program enrollment caps.

To apply for either waiver program, Roswell seniors can contact the Atlanta Regional Commission Aging Division at (404) 463-3333 to start the assessment process.

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living

Assisted Living Bridge Loan

Bridge loans from Elderlife Financial are designed to provide cash-strapped seniors the means to pay assisted living expenses over a short-term period of time. The loans are usually offered as a line of credit that allows the borrower to schedule automatic payments to their facility for monthly rent and care fees. Lump-sum loan disbursements are also available to cover larger expenses, such as entrance fees and buy-ins. Bridge loans are offered in terms of up to 12 months, which typically allows seniors ample financial breathing room while benefit applications are processed or a home or other assets are sold.

Interested seniors can apply for a bridge loan online or by phone. Contact Elderlife Financial Services at (888) 228-4500 to learn more.

Optional State Supplementation

Georgia residents eligible for federal SSI benefits and living in a licensed long-term care facility may also qualify for the Optional State Supplementation program. This state-funded benefit provides a $20 cash top up to a person’s monthly SSI payment, which may be used for expenses not covered by Medicaid, such as assisted living room-and-board costs.

To apply for SSI benefits and the OSS top up, Roswell residents can contact the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213.
