I visited the Lake House in Largo. It's very nice and very open. There's stuff going on, it's not gloomy, and they have a beautiful place overlooking the lake in the back. You could sit out there on the screened-in porch -- it's not even a porch, it looked like a room. There are activities going on, too. When I was there, they were getting ready to do something. There were probably twelve people there sitting around. They were serving them lemonade.

Royal Palms is a beautiful facility and very up to date. But it was kind of cold, the staff wasn't warm and friendly, and we only saw a few residents. I didn't see that many people, and I didn't see that many smiles like I saw at the other place I toured. The rooms would have had overlooked the huge parking lot; they didn't have a nice view. The building itself was beautiful. The library was very small, and they only had one library.

My visit at Indian Oaks Assisted Living was very good. The place was clean, and the staff was very nice. I got a chance to talk to several of the people including the manager, and they were all very good. Their rooms are more like studios, the sizes are 1-2 people per room with their own bathroom. They also have activities and trips, and at the time I was there they were playing cards. I have also picked up a calendar of the activities that they have for that month. They have a screened-in area outside, they also have an exercise room and they do a limited amount of physical therapy there as well. They also have a common room where they eat and also do activities, play games and converse in.

We loved Regal Palms. It's incredible, beautiful, and very well maintained. It had large apartments, and all the doorways were ADA maintained, so wheelchairs could get to them very easily. It was a much older population. The staff was dynamic, wonderful, very kind, very caring, and they went out of their way to make sure all your needs were met. However, its rate got a little outrageous for us. If you had the money, that's the only place to go. They had tons of activities. They went to casinos, restaurants, and daytime cruises. They had everything. The food was good but a little bland. They had homemade specials every day for breakfast and pancakes were available every single day. They had an ice cream parlor, a coffee machine, and an enormous freezer full of all sorts of ice cream bars and popsicles, which you can have anytime you wanted it.

I'm at Royal Palms and it's going very well. I'm pleased. Everyone seems so welcoming, so nice, and courteous. I liked the unit that I looked at and the one just below it. It has the same layout and everything. The staff is very accommodating. They're here to make this a good experience for us. It's nutritional type food, but it's good and we have choices of beef, chicken, and fish. They have a variety of activities if you want to participate. It's very reasonable.

Oak Manor was close to my house. I liked the people and the way it was set up. It wasn't exactly a place we would call institutional, and I think my mom would be a little happier there. They're also very reasonable.

We chose Royal Palms for a couple of reasons. One is its location. It is very close to where we currently live and therefore we don't change much from the societal point of view, so it is very favorable. We got a very nice large apartment there -- it's around 1,600 square-feet -- which is not offered by any of the other places. We also liked their policy of 'no lease,' which is basically a month-to-month rental. This way, if it doesn't work out, we can go somewhere else without any problems. They have plenty of activities for us. There are a lot of games being played, particularly bridge, which we like. There are intermittent shows that come in for performances. They have social activities like going out to dinner, to plays, and to movies. We enjoy those too. They have arts and crafts and all kinds of things, some of which we won't be interested in, but many of them we will. This place is also very close to a large community center, which we plan to make use of. This is all very positive for us. We have had a couple of meals there and they seemed good, too.

Oak Manor Senior Living Community had a nice cafeteria. I would certainly consider it. The staff took us around and showed us the homes and they have plenty of space. They have a very nice dog run right outside the assisted living homes, which would be very important for me since I have two dogs. The people there were very nice and the meals were very good. They were hospitable and when we were in the cafeteria a lot of people came up and introduced themselves to us.

Oak Manor is the one we picked for my aunt. She hasn't moved in yet, but it's excellent. I picked that community because the facility was nice, the staff seemed caring, the residents were happy and well cared for, and the rooms were very spacious and well cared for.
