The best way to get to know a community is by scheduling a tour. See the facilities, meet the staff and residents, and get a feel first hand what it's like to live at Raincross at Riverside Assisted Living.
I'm a current resident here in Raincross at Riverside. There've been more people moving in for a while and I don't know what the reason is. I'm on the second floor and there are nice trees to look at. I only have a room for a large television, a desk, a closet, and a little area here that they put together. It's just a very small room and that's one of my problems here. The staff are getting better. They don't always show up, but they're trying to improve it. That's one of the main problems they have here. We have water painting and I do that. We read the bible some days. I don't do that, but they do it. They have trouble getting people involved. I hardly get to see the directors. Some of the staff would come sometimes, but sometimes they don't. They are friendly and they'll make the bed. The grounds are pretty good, but I don't think it's a good layout. Some rooms are really small, some are big, and some have two bedrooms. There aren't rooms downstairs. My main complaint here is the food. They have improved a lot of activities.
Raincross at Riverside has 65 residents, and they do the usual things that retirement centers do. They have a nice room where they can go at night and have snacks. That's really important to seniors, because they need to know that when you get hungry there's someplace they can go to get some food, especially when there's nothing in your little refrigerator that doesn't feel like home. They can also go any time of the day there to get some food, popcorn, drinks, and cookies. They also serve three meals a day. The service was very good and the food was delicious. They have all the activities that you would expect at any of the retirement centers. The reason why we picked this one for my friend was because of the room. She liked the room best compared to the other places. It's a studio room, those isn't very big, but it did have a five-foot closet and it was made kind of like a little arc, instead of straight across, so you can actually sit at one end of the studio and not see the other end. That helps, otherwise I'd get claustrophobic. What really helped was that they dressed up a room, the experts come in and they put the furniture in the room to show her what it would look like. That appealed to her a lot because she could see how she could have things. The dresser that was there fit perfectly, and the bed was right under the window overlooking the patio. It was really a nice layout. It also has an area with a microwave that sits on a little fridge, then sink and cabinets right there. The bathrooms are really large, you can walk around in those bathrooms, and they have a walk-in shower with a lift that's about four inches, and nice, big high stool. The shower has this nice head that you can take down to wash yourself with, and if you want to then put it back up, there are also bars. The safety factor is there, which is important. My friend can completely take care of herself, but they give her medicine, and she has dementia that's just started. This community is nicely located too. The staff members are very personable to people and are really very kind. In terms of the value for the money, they are the most reasonable compared to the other communities. They also have a separate dining room so it can seat eight to ten people. It has a door that you can close so when you have family who comes for a special occasion they can eat in that room. It's lovely.
Being at Raincross at Riverside was like being in a hospital. The rooms were small and you have to share a room. The staff member who showed me around did a good job though. The outside was very clean and very nice because it was newer; however, the cost was twice as much as the other community.
Raincross at Riverside is homier than my parents' previous community, and for half the cost. They offer a lot of activities, they have a swimming pool, and things like that. It's a leveled facility and they are both in assisted living. My mother loves being able to choose what she wants to eat, and the value was just unbelievable. I think that if you have to place your parents somewhere other than their home, this place is second- best. It's like a nice hotel.
