Medi-Cal doesn&rsquo;t count some assets, such as one vehicle, an irrevocable burial trust and an owner-occupied house, condominium&nbsp;or mobile home, regardless of the value of the dwelling.&nbsp; 
 
Spousal Asset and Income Rules 
 
Special rules apply when only one spouse in a married couple needs long-term Medi-Cal services in order to protect the&nbsp;non-applicant spouse, called the community spouse, from impoverishment.&nbsp; 
 
The community spouse&rsquo;s income is disregarded on the Medi-Cal application. If that spouse depends on financial support from the spouse who requires care, the minimum monthly maintenance needs allowance rule&nbsp;lets&nbsp;the applicant transfer up to $3,161 per month to the community spouse without penalty.&nbsp;

This home and community-based waiver lets seniors remain in a noninstitutional setting, such as an assisted living facility, by funding enhanced medical and nonmedical care services.
