The earliest European visitors to the area were French Catholic missionaries and fur traders in the early 1800s. Several breweries were quickly set up and soon people all over the country were enjoying Milwaukee beer. The popularity of this amber drink has not waned. Residents enjoying independent living in Milwaukee no doubt often drink a pint or two in one of the dozens of taverns that can be found all over the city streets of old Brew Town.
