My 93 year old mother and her 18 year old cat have lived in one of their bedroom with separate living area rooms for 3 years and loves it. The staff are extremely wonderful, so attentive and caring, even when mom goes to the hospital, the staff feed the cat and give it attention. The home is very well kept, clean and inviting. The Activity Director offers activities through out the day that gives the residents opportunities to socialize and keep busy if they wish. Their maintenance man is more of a son to all the residence and attends to all their needs. The administrators are within the building and accessible to answer any concerns or questions. Strake has been a God send for my Mom. I highly recommend checking this place out.

If you’re looking for a wonderful place for your loved one, then look no further. The caring nature of the staff as a whole really makes this place special. They have two enclosed courtyards for entertaining with one housing a full farm-to-table style garden! Excellent food, excellent activities, and excellent location. Nowhere in the surrounding area offers this type of living at this type of price!

Shannondell at Valley Forge was our dream retirement community, but it has transformed dramatically since we moved in before the pandemic. Initially, it was an active 55+ community, with vibrant residents, outstanding restaurants, and elegant evenings where we'd dress up for dinner. Fast forward, and it's disheartening to witness the shift. Most residents now rely on scooters or walkers, and in the communal spaces one can find residents napping on furniture along with their caregivers, despite management's disapproval. The place is now reminiscent of a nursing home. The decline in the living environment has been disheartening. My advice to prospective residents is to thoroughly assess the current state of Shannondell, as it no longer embodies the vibrant, active community it advertises. Look closely and don't rely on what marketing tells you.

My mom had a terrible experience. From the day we moved in, there were issues. The device to call the nurse and listen to te TV was broken and we were told they would get to it at some point. My mom went in relatively healthy but one week later, she had to be transferred back to the hospital. She had a fever, a UTI swollen limbs and hands, delirium, she was left in her soiled diapers for hours, she couldn’t breathe but for some reason they fought with us because they didn’t want to treat her. We begged them to treat her for her health issues because she was getting worse and worse. But the staff was rude and deliberately not helpful. Overall nightmare. Back in Bryn Mawr hospital finally getting the care she needs and deserves.

My wife is currently staying in The Sanctuary at Wilmington Place. The rooms are excellent, and the appearance of the place is great. The grounds are nicely kept, and the staff has been super friendly. The only activity that she participates in -- that I'm aware of -- is bingo. In the previous place she was in, she mentioned that they had more things for her to do and that they didn't have to sit in their rooms much. Dayton is still not as loose on everything due to COVID, so they're still basically locked down. Also, they went through wild cases of COVID that hit their place. The dining room seems to be pretty good. My wife is not a very picky eater so she's fine with the food. They have a room with a pool table, and I'm not really sure what else they have because at first, I wasn't even allowed to come in. They were still doing window visits, and then they opened it up to one visit per week per resident. I told them that was not acceptable to me because we both had gotten our shots, and that's not enough visitation for the resident or for me. Right now, I get to go in on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for four hours at a time, and I still have my Sunday half hour. They're a very expensive place, and that's the same as anybody else, but they were a little bit cheaper than some of the others.

The Birches at Harleysville was very nice. The person who gave me the tour was excellent. The apartments were very nice too. I saw quite a few of the rooms, and I thought everything was really good. They had game rooms, activity areas, a music room, and a movie room.

I really liked them. The people were really nice. It was pretty. It looked like the residents were well taken care of. It wasn't overly big. It wasn't a place that I would think would be overwhelming for a resident. It was very clean, and it looked like it was recently updated. I think that they had just done some remodeling, so it was really nice. I was accommodated really good. We were greeted at the door and they took us for a tour throughout the facility. I think that place had a really nice courtyard in the back. They took us everywhere, showed us everything, and they told us how they were accommodating visiting family members with the COVID virus going around. They were very informative.

The type of care chosen has a major impact on the cost of senior care. For example, nursing home care is nearly double the cost of assisted living in Montgomery County. The average monthly cost of a private, one-bedroom apartment in an assisted living facility is $742 more than the average monthly cost of homemaker services or a home health aide. It’s important to remember that the cost for home care doesn’t include separate expenses, such as water, electricity, groceries and rent or mortgage payments. However, the monthly fees for assisted living include these additional expenses. Cost of Homemaker/Home Health Aide Comparison Chart

The Pennsylvania Community HealthChoices Program is a Medicaid program for Pennsylvania citizens who are 21 or older and qualify for both Medicaid (called Medicaid Assistance in PA) and Medicare or those eligible for nursing home care.
CHC was rolled out in phases under the Pennsylvania Department of Aging Medicaid Waiverand caters to seniors and the disabled with medical benefits and long-term support to encourage independent living and avoid unnecessary placement in nursing homes. Services include personal care services, including help with the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), such as bathing, meal preparation and meal assistance. These services can be used by residents of assisted living facilities. Enrollment is mandatory for those who meet the eligibility requirements.
Montgomery County seniors who meet the eligibility standards for CHC must meet the asset and income requirements for the program. This income includes employment wages, IRA withdrawals, pension payments, alimony payments, Social Security disability income, Social Security income and stock dividends. As of 2018, a single elderly individual cannot earn more than $2,313 per month or $4,626 for a married couple. The asset limit per senior is $2,000, but an additional $6,000 can be disregarded, for a total exemption of $8,000. In addition, the following are disregarded: your home (if you live in it or plan to return, and it’s valued under $572,000), household items and personal effects.
There are several ways for Montgomery County seniors to apply to CHC. You can apply or renew Medical Assistance benefits online via COMPASS. You can also call the Consumer Service Center for Health Care Coverage at 866-550-4355. Alternately, contact your local county assistance office for help.
PACE (LIFE)
Living Independence for the Elderly (LIFE) provides an all-inclusive package of medical and supportive services for Montgomery County seniors. It’s part of a national program called the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly. All PACE providers in Pennsylvania have “LIFE” in their name.
LIFE is available to help frail elders eligible for nursing home care stay in their homes or assisted living facilities. Services include social, medical and day services for Montgomery County seniors age 55 and older. No Montgomery County senior is turned down due to income. However, those who aren’t eligible pay the premium that Medicaid would pay to receive long-term care services. Locate a LIFE Provider in your area, or call the PA CHC Helpline at 1-844-824-3655
Elderlife Bridge Loans
Elderlife helps Montgomery County seniors looking to move to senior living, including assisted living. This company offers bridge loans to the elderly and family members in need of gap funding to pay for care. Loan approval is based on creditworthiness, but several family members can cosign to help pay for care and improve the likelihood of approval. Lenders typically require that a permanent plan for funding be in place before approving a loan. For more information or to apply, call (888) 228-4500.
Long-Term Care Insurance
Families of seniors seeking financial assistance should ask their loved one if they purchased a long-term care insurance plan, which can be used to cover the cost of assisted living facilities. If seniors are still living at home and in good health, they may still be able to buy long-term care insurance. Fidelity is just one company offering this product, and the company has an online calculator to help you determine the cost of a policy in Montgomery County. For more information, call (866) 489-0963.
