Sunrise of Gurnee had a home-like environment with vaulted ceilings and stairways. It looked more like a Victorian home. They had bingo and community rides to CVS, Walgreen's, shopping, and dinners. They had a library, big TV screens, and common areas where you can play cards and puzzles. The sales and marketing people were very energetic, very bubbly, very lively, very interested, and really listened to what we had to say about my mother-in-law. Their screening process was extensive. They get down to what books you like to read, what colors you like, what crafts you like, or what do you do when you're angry or when you're happy. They go really in-depth. They had nurses checking on you and aides all the time. They had a good amount of acreage around them. They had walking trails and you can take your family member out to the gazebo or gardens. They had a dog running around there, which was fine with me, but some people might not like it.

My first impression of Sunrise of Gurnee was when I made the appointment to go see it, they called me back to confirm, and when I got there, they acted like they were surprised to see us. The woman who eventually took us around was very nice. My mother liked it because it was VERY social. There were lots of activities, and I thought the facility was very nice. People seemed to be very happy there, and we saw a lot of interaction. They showed us a big room that I was very impressed with. My mother would have been sharing the memory care room with another Alzheimer's patient, and I didn’t like the idea, but I thought the folks were very nice. It was very social which is what my mother is looking for, and I thought she could be happy there.
