My parents are staying at Sandhill Gardens in Punta Gorda. It's been great; everybody there is wonderful. They seem to be happy with everything. The food, there's lots of activities, and the fact that we can actually visit them is really cool. It's just a really nice and clean facility. They're in a one-bedroom apartment and it's got a little kitchenette with no oven or stove, but it's got a microwave and little refrigerator, and plenty of cabinet spaces. It also has a beautiful screened lanai that they share with four different residents that opens up into a beautiful courtyard. I'm not sure if they have two-bedrooms or not. I just know they have the studios and one-bedrooms. They have activities every day and their activity director, Brenda, is awesome. She does a lot of fun things with them. They stay so busy that my stepmother complained today that they're so busy they don't get much done at home. They don't really have much to do at home because they're doing everything for them. I'm not sure if they have a salon but they do have someone that comes in and does my stepmother's hair. I don't know what their facility is for that. I didn't ask, I just know they have someone that comes in and does that. They don't allow families to have dinners with the residents right now because of the COVID. My dad really likes the food, he doesn't complain. They're one of the least expensive ones of the ones that we've tried, so I would say the value is good.

We are using Home Instead Senior Care for my mother. They help her get up in the morning, get dressed, and make her breakfast. They give her medication reminders, provide companion care, they do sponge baths, they help her brush her teeth, they give her showers, do some limited exercises with her, and make her lunch. The staff has been very good. The only thing that I requested from them was to get a more consistent schedule of caregiving, if I can limit the number of caregivers in a week, it helps with my mother's confusion. We're working on it, and if I could get two caregivers a week, that would be wonderful.

The Courtyard Assisted Living was not as well kept as other places. The room we went into smelled very bad. The staff member seemed friendly enough, but I would not consider using them. It was homey, but it was not well kept. The staff member showed us a room. It was an adequate size, but it had a really bad odor. They needed to replace the carpet. I have no idea what they do for activities because the staff member didn't explain it to me.

Costs of senior care are based on the type of service provided, the level of care and whether the care is community-based or residential. In Punta Gorda, nursing home care is more than twice the cost of assisted living. In-home care, such as a home health aide or homemaker, is about $1,000 more a month than assisted living. In addition to paying higher fees, seniors interested in home health services must also account for living expenses, such as rent/mortgage, utilities, maintenance and groceries. These costs are typically included in the price of assisted living care. Cost of Homemaker/Home Health Aide Comparison Chart

Medicaid is a national health insurance program that is a joint initiative between the federal and state governments. It acts as a safety net for people who have both a low income and limited assets and may otherwise not have the resources to access health coverage.Â
Like all states, Florida Medicaid coverage eligibility includes strict income and countable asset limits. Single seniors in Florida need to earn less than $2,313 per month and own less than $2,000 in cash, bonds and savings to qualify for Medicaid, while couples applying together can make no more than $4,626 per month and own a maximum of $3,000 worth of countable assets.Â
For Medicaid, countable assets exclude personal effects such as clothing and jewelry, household items, one vehicle and a primary residence valued at $585,000 or less.Â
Florida seniors who are 65 or older and qualify for Medicaid coverage may also be eligible for benefits that can be partially used to pay for assisted living through the Florida Statewide Medicaid Managed Care, Long Term Care Program. Although benefits through the SSMCÂ LTCÂ program cannot be used to pay for the monthly room-and-board portion of assisted living costs, these benefits are available to help with care costs for seniors. Eligible expenses through the SSMCÂ LTCÂ include attendant care, homemakers, medical equipment and supplies, transportation and personal care services.Â
To learn more about Florida Medicaid and the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care, Long Term Care Program, call the statewide Florida Elder Helpline at (800) 963-5337 or contact the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration at (877) 711-3662.Â
Veterans Aid and Attendance and Housebound Benefits
Honorably discharged veterans and their surviving spouses who currently qualify for a regular VA pension may be eligible for additional benefits. This program, known as Aid and Attendance and Housebound Benefits, involves two separate benefit top-ups in addition to the monthly VA pension.Â
Note that benefits from Aid and Attendance cannot be combined with benefits from the Housebound top-up. Veterans who are already receiving the VA disability pension are excluded from these benefits.
Veterans who have previously been disqualified from a regular VA pension may be eligible to receive both a VA pension and top-up benefits as a result of the increased rates provided through the Aid and Attendance and Housebound Benefits program.Â
The Aid and Attendance increased monthly pension amount may be provided to veterans and their surviving spouses who meet at least one of the following conditions:Â
