I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

The Brennity at Daphne is a nice and clean building. Housekeeping is nice. The staff seemed friendly and nice. On mom's first day there, they had somebody playing the piano and singing. But at their first opportunity, they tried to ship my mom to hospital. They gave her sleeping medicine so she'll sleep at night because they want people not to walk around and be any trouble. A week before that, I spent all night at the hospital because they claimed my mom had distressed breathing, but in the hospital they did all the tests and sent her back because there was nothing wrong. She was sleeping. The first week there, they sent my mom to the hospital because she had an infection. When she got back out, four days later I spent all night at the hospital because they said that my mom didn't seem like she was getting enough oxygen. I have an oximeter at my house and I put it on her finger, and her oxygen level was nearly as high as mine. Whoever's the nurse needs to care a little bit more.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

The Brennity at Daphne is sort of an upscale assisted living community. It's very well-decorated, clean, and it smelled good. The food is pretty good. It's where my mom ended up going so I have eaten there several times now. It kind of fluctuates. Sometimes it's really good, but other times it's not. Someone comes in to do their hair twice a month, they have art classes, they have arts and crafts every day, and game times every day where they play bingo and card games. Every month they have a theme. Last month it was Olympics, so they did a lot of different activities that they could win medals for. It was really cute. They would also take the residents on appointments and to outings. When I was down there the last time that big Powerball lottery was going on, so they just took a busload of residents and went and bought lottery tickets. They keep them busy, and they also have dances and music weekly, church services, and a ton of stuff to do.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Daphne

Medicaid in Alabama

Alabama’s Medicaid program provides health insurance to low-income residents including aged, blind and disabled persons. It covers a broad range of health care services including doctor visits, hospital inpatient and outpatient care, diagnostic testing and prescription medications. As in most states, Alabama’s Medicaid plan is administered by the state but jointly funded and regulated by the federal government.

To qualify for the state Medicaid plan as a senior, applicants must be 65 years of age or older. Financial requirements stipulate that single applicants can have a maximum income of $791 per month and up to $2,000 in countable assets. Married applicants are allowed a maximum income of $1,177 per month and up to $3,000 in assets. Although all income counts, some assets don’t, such as an applicant’s home providing it’s occupied, a single vehicle and personal belongings such as jewelry and household furnishings.

To apply for Medicaid, Daphne residents can visit the Mobile Medicaid office at 2800 Dauphin Street, Suite 105, or call (866) 371-4078.

Alabama Community Transition Waiver

Alabama’s ACT waiver provides assistance for seniors and disabled persons to transition from a nursing facility back into their home or an assisted living facility. In addition to covering transition and moving costs, this waiver covers other services such as case management, nurse visits and necessary medical equipment and supplies.

The program is available to Alabama residents of all ages, provided they live in a nursing facility and are capable of transitioning into a community setting that provides a lower level of care. Any senior who wishes to take advantage of the waiver program must be assessed to determine if they can reside in the community safely with the provided services and support. They must also meet the program’s financial requirements of a monthly income below $2,313 and a maximum of $2,000 in countable assets.

To apply for this waiver, individuals can contact the Alabama Department of Senior Services at (800) 243-5463.

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living

Optional State Supplementation

Alabama’s OSS program provides a cash benefit to aged, blind and disabled individuals who require long-term care. This monthly payment can be used to cover assisted living facility expenses that aren’t paid by the state Medicaid plan and its waivers.  To qualify for OSS payments, applicants must receive or be eligible for federal Supplemental Security Income benefits.

To learn more or to apply for SSI or OSS benefits, seniors can contact the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213.

Elderlife Bridge Loan

Seniors who are unable to cover the upfront costs associated with moving to an assisted living facility may find a short-term solution with a bridge loan from Elderlife Financial Services. These loans can be applied for online or by phone, and approval decisions and access to funds often take place within one business day. Elderlife loans have repayment terms of up to 24 months, which allows a senior ample time to arrange a long-term source of assisted living funding.
