I visited this facility

Brookdale Virginia Beach was pretty clean. Everybody seemed friendly. It seemed like a decent place. The person who gave us the tour was very accommodating and provided good information. The dining area seemed appropriate. They seemed to have varied activities available for the residents.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My son had been in Brookdale Virginia Beach for a couple of months. It's a pretty nice facility, but the doctor who was seeing him said he didn't belong in that place. It's mostly much older people seriously ill with dementia. He had been in a state of dementia due to cardiac arrest but he's only 60 years old and still pretty active and able to carry on a conversation. This doctor said that we should find a better place for him because he's not getting much care here that will stimulate him. It looked like a very pleasant place. They had a couple of outdoor gardens where the residents could go, and the rooms were very nice and well furnished. You either bring your own or they have furniture if you didn't have any. He had his own furniture. It was nice for people to come visit him there. Very few of the staff there were nurses. They were nursing aides or assistants. There really weren't very many planned activities for them. It didn't seem like they were doing much except keeping them safe and well fed. They didn't even make an effort to get them outside very often either. I thought with the pretty gardens and outdoor seating they had, some of the attendants might take them out on pretty days, but they didn't. They didn't really encourage them to go out. The administrator and her assistant were both very nice and very efficient. The food was fine, and I never heard my son complain about it. The price is a little on the high side but I know this type of care is expensive. There's not really any individualized care there. In general, they watch the people and keep them safe and keep them well fed, but I don't think there's any real specific activity especially for the younger more active people who are able to do more.
