Brookdale Sugar Land

I Visited This Facility

Brookdale Sugar Land was clean, and the people who lived there seemed happy and well taken care of. The staff was very nice and professional. The food and the menu looked good, and the dining area was nice and clean. I liked this one of all of them because it was newer and well maintained. Some of them were playing bridge in one of the rooms.

Everybody was very nice at Brookdale Sugar Land. However, my mom's memory is not as bad as the patients I saw there. The building was small, older, and looked like a cozy house, but it needs some remodeling. The center patio was sad and basically had nothing on it. The people were very attentive. It seemed like people stayed there for a long time.

I visited Brookdale Sugarland on a very busy day. There were a few people waited to been helped when I arrived, but nobody seemed thrilled about helping out. The staff seemed to not really enjoy their work; however they were still trying to assist everyone. I visited right after lunch so I don't know much about the food, except that the menu is fair. There were no activities scheduled on the day of my visit, but the residents seemed content. The common areas, hallways, and rooms that I saw all appeared clean.

Brookdale Sugarland is a well kept senior living care facility. The interior design has a warm country modern style. Throughout Brookdale it appears to be clean and comfortable for the residents. There isn't an issue with space when it comes to the rooms, bathrooms or dining rooms. The caregivers are friendly and constantly working. Some of the more challenging residents take a little more time to care for. That causes the caregivers to be a bit inpatient at times. On a typical day the nurses are always busy. But they still make their rounds to double check the caregivers. The food is healthy and taste fair. Depending on who is participating in the activities the residents are engaged. Sometimes it can take a lot of energy or help from other staff to get the residents more involved.

On 6/30/2013 my father received injuries requiring ER medical attention. He was in the memory care unit and not supposed to be able to get out. The DADS investigation has substantiated the allegation of neglect. My father got out. My father was charged for the ER medical services. Emeritus has refused to pay for the bills that were a result of their care. Simply put, it happened on their watch and the are responsible. They have offered to pay half if I sign a settlement and release of claims. They also deny any responsibility for the incident. I can not sign it. Please be aware of this business practice of Emeritus. They want to take you money for the care they provide but will not accept the responsibility of their actions if something goes wrong. If they are not responsible, WHO IS?

I Am A Friend Or Relative Of A Current/Past Resident

I am disappointed in this facility. My father was in Memory Care. In my complaint to DADS the allegation of neglect was substantiated. My father eloped from the Memory Care Unit. How? Apparently, a staff member did not secure the door when they left. Apparently, while being escorted back to Memory Care by two staff members, he was startled by their pages. They were distrcted by the pages and my father, startled, walked quickly into the steel door entrance to Memory Care. He required ER medical attention. Emeritus is not paying for these expenses. Terribly, disappointed and with my TRUST broken, I moved my father. Please keep this in mind when reviewing services at Emeritus.
