<p>Heather Glen Senior Living's Memory Care Community is grounded on a Philosophy of Wellness. We emphasize the Physical, Spiritual, Emotional, Social, Intellectual, and Environmental aspects of Wellness. Each resident with Alzheimer's, or any other form of dementia, will be therapeutically assessed to determine their ability and capability.  <p>We have a smaller enclosed 18-bed unit inside of our home specifically for those who have dementia or Alzheimer's. Memory Lane has its own dining and activity area, as well as a private fenced courtyard planted to please all the senses. A smaller area is better for people with dementia because these patients may tend to get lost easily or wander . The smaller unit makes it easier for those residents to go where they want to safely, without being overwhelmed.</p>
 
 
 
 <p><h4>Life at Mountain View</h4></p>
 
 <p>Come make new friends during meals in the spacious dining rooms. Sip on a cup of coffee in the bistro or dance to some Big Band music with your honey in the lounge. Morning worship is offered every day, with several local churches visiting our residents and offering denominational services regularly. Wednesday afternoons offer an opportunity to share snacks and drinks during â€œHappy Hourâ€, although we never limit â€œhappyâ€ to only one â€œhourâ€. On Movie Night, we revisit the Hollywood classics and stars of yesteryear. Many residents enjoy BINGO, card games, or other games,and they enjoy it more when they WIN! Our wheelchair-accessible bus takes residents on local shopping, dining, and casino trips and more! We've also started some community service projects, including collecting BoxTops for our local school children, and making home-made treats for our four-legged friends at the local animal shelter.</p>

 <p>Our direct care staff (called â€œPCA's) carry pagers, which notify them of pendant calls, emergency calls, or wander guard alerts. With this system, all the staff can rapidly respond to calls and emergencies.</p>
 
 
 
 <p><b>Fire Safety</b></p>
 
 <p>If the unexpected happens, our building is equipped with a fire alarm system with pull stations and extinguishers located throughout the home. We also have a building-wide sprinkler system, and full fire suppression system in our kitchens.</p>
 
 
 
 <p>All staff are trained about fire prevention and evacuation on their first day, and at least annually afterward. Finally, our building has monthly fire drills, which everyone (staff and residents) is required to participate in.</p>

Our ultimate goal at South Mountain Memory Care is to enrich the quality of life of our residents. To do this we built SMMC in the small house model that has been found to be the most successful environment in providing that sense of home, connectedness and ultimately, happiness. Research indicates that residents in small house communities were significantly more socially engaged and displayed few non-aggressive behaviors, such as wandering, than residents in larger, traditional settings. 

While the small scale is critical, there are other design elements we included:

Separate bedroom suites with clear paths from the bedroom to bathroom designed to reduce the stress associated with toileting and bathing.
Abundance of natural light that helps regulate circadian rhythms which can alleviate sleep disorders, sundowning and seasonal depression.
Way finding and orientation with the use of colors, aromatherapy and artwork, including views to the outdoors that promotes the use of exterior spaces and walking.
Safety and security, not only is it important for residents to be safe and secure they must perceive themselves to be safe and secure. This can be achieved with restricted window openings and secure garden fences. Secure outdoor spaces give people with dementia a secure place to go outside and helps reduce elopement attempts because residents no longer feel cooped up.
Consistent staff assignments with the same staff assigned to the same house at the same time in order to foster a sense of familiarity, an ability to truly know each individual and cater to their needs.
Smaller, intimate gathering places for those residents that feel overwhelmed by larger crowds.
The design and layout of SMMC minimize overstimulation as many residents become overwhelmed by large groups and spaces and can be susceptible to confusion and distraction. This is where more intimate settings should be provided. We mitigate the size of our 24 room small house by linking two 12 room houses around a central Town Hall that can be used for arts and crafts, dining and group activities.


Alzheimers and dementia profoundly affect families and need to be addressed delicately. The individual living with cognitive impairment needs special care in all facets of life. Similarly, the physical and emotional effects on the caregiver and other loved ones are difficult.
