My mom was in Gurwin Rehabilitation in 2019 after breaking her hip. She was also dying from lung cancer and COPD. My mom received excellent compassionate care from all staff. The doctors, social worker and nurses were easily accessible and helpful. The PT Department were excellent. The facility was always very clean. Mom only complained about the food not being up to her standard. When we realized my mom needed hospice, the social worker and doctors were very compassionate and helped me to make all the arrangements to bring her home with hospice care so she could die in peace with her family surrounding her. Gurwin is the best and I give it a 5 star rating.

I visited this facility

I visited my brother-in-law in Sunrise of Holbrook at the assisted living. It's basically a building with lots of senior citizens who need assistance. The room was clean. They were very respectful and very nice. It had a TV/lounge area, and they play games. It's all in this one building. They have a walking area and a place where you can have picnics. It was very clean, good, and sanitized.

I visited this facility

The apartment in Atria South Setauket is beautiful. It's spacious, and they provide a meal plan for them, which my dad can still have even though he can cook in his kitchen in his apartment. It's probably the nicest one that we saw, with the most reasonable price, and it also has a pool. He loves to sit by the pool. The people he met seemed quite friendly, too.

My father was at Atria Hertlin Place. Their food and activities were excellent. The facility was beautiful, too. The only thing was, they had a water issue for a month. It was on and off, and my dad was not getting hot water in his shower or sink. They didn't even reduce the rent. They suggested moving him to another room, but he has Alzheimer's. I don't want to move him to another room and back because it might confuse him even more. I was a little upset with that situation. They have activities like shopping, movie nights, bingo nights, and dinners where they would dress up and have live music. They also have crafts, gardening, and an exercise room. They had excellent facilities. I know the hot-water issue was something internally with the building itself, and they had someone looking at it, so I don't really blame them. I get it, things happen, but the management could have been a little bit more understanding. We could have taken him to go get a shower at other places or take him to my house. They should have discounted his rent or done something to compensate for that. It was inconvenient.

I am a past client of this provider

My father used Right at Home Eastern Long Island. They provided light housekeeping, meals, and medication reminders. He has dementia and he has a good deal of suspicion about people in the house. Many times he would send them packing because he didn't want people in the house and didn't want to accept any help, but I personally liked them. They did a good job, and they did what they were supposed to do. Communication with the agency was very good. The coordinator would try very hard to keep me up-to-date, but there was confusion sometimes.

We're using Right at Home Eastern Long Island for my mother. They drive her, take her to appointments, and do light housekeeping. The caregivers are caring, responsible, and there's excellent communication. I'm a satisfied client.

I visited this facility

Birchwood Suites was nice but it was far away from me so I didn't choose my mom to go there. They showed me a semi-private unit, a large bedroom with two beds and two drawers. The dining room was kind of in an L-shape. They all ate the same meal; there was no picking off the menu. They had tablecloths on the table. They said that whenever all are done eating, after that they would bring them into the activities room and the director was there. The activities room was nice, big and bright. If they weren't interested in doing the activities, they could sit in a room and watch TV. The grounds were very nice.

Birchwood Suites is a smaller facility than the one my mother was in prior to this. They have a good amount of activities, an activity room, a music room, piano, TV rooms, crafts, and bingo. Her room has two twin beds, it's very clean, and the bathroom is very modern and clean. It has no carpeting and no tripping hazards. She said the food is pretty good, but there's not a lot of choices. Everybody that I've met has been very outgoing. It's a very clean place and much bigger than it looks.

The Arbors Hauppauge was OK for the first few years that Mom was there, but they didn't have enough staff members to handle the level of care that she needed, especially as she aged. They had a good amount of activities, entertainment, and live music during holidays. I didn't care for the room. It was a lot smaller than the one that she's in now. They didn't take very good care of the room and they didn't take good care of the laundry. They also didn't very efficiently clean the room at all. I had to ask them several times to shampoo the carpets. The food was very good, and they gave them a variety of options. Some of the staff members were very good and some were not. They just went through a renovation, so it's pretty good, and they're still doing other things to the facility. The room itself was not great, but they redid the common areas.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Suffolk County

Medicaid in New York

In New York, Medicaid can help pay for medical care and services for long-term care, home health assistance and an assisted living facility, and it also provides seniors with the medical equipment, transportation and supplies necessary to ensure quality of life.

Those who have limited financial income may receive low-cost or free medical assistance through the NYS Medicaid State Plan. To be eligible, an individual must be age 65 or older, a resident of the state of New York and a U.S. citizen (or have satisfactory immigration status). To meet financial requirements, single seniors’ income must be $842 per month or less, and couples must have an income of less than $1,233 per month. Non-exempt assets cannot exceed $15,150 for a single candidate and $22,200 for couples.

You may still be eligible for Medicaid if your income is a bit over the limit with the Medicaid Excess Income program, also known as the spend-down or surplus-income program. The amount of your excess income is similar to a deductible; once your medical bills meet the requirements for a particular month, Medicaid pays your additional medical bills for the remainder of that month.

Medicaid usually has 45 days to process your application, and if the application requires a disability determination, the agency can take 90 days. Applications may be processed more quickly if:

  • You don’t have caretakers able and willing to provide care
  • You aren’t receiving the necessary assistance from a home care service agency
  • You have no third party insurance or Medicare benefits
  • You don’t have the adaptive or specialized equipment required to meet your health needs

Once eligibility has been firmly resolved, you will receive notification in the mail with further instructions.

The NY Assisted Living Program (ALP) is a waiver that pays for the services of a licensed assisted living residence for individuals who require a certain level of care, but doesn’t need the in-depth services of nursing home care. To qualify, individuals must be age 21 and over, have a degree of self-mobility to function in an assisted living environment and meet the income limits of Medicaid recipients. Services paid by ALP include personal care, skilled nursing, room and board, occupational and physical therapy and personal emergency response services. This program is open to Medicaid-eligible and ineligible individuals.

The ALP is regulated by the State Department of Health and has limited enrollment, so it’s not unusual to be placed on a waiting list. To apply for Medicaid, call (855) 355-5777, apply online or visit the local office in your area.

Veterans, Survivors and Aid and Attendance Pension plans

Financially stressed veterans and their families who are looking for assistance with assisted living costs can get relief with these pensions. The VA helps wartime veterans, surviving spouses and children with financial challenges by providing monthly supplemental tax-free revenue to those with low income. Also, wartime veterans and surviving spouses who are housebound or need the aid and attendance of another person may be eligible for additional monetary payments on top of the regular monthly pension. While there is extensive eligibility requirements, some qualifications include:

  • Veterans having served actively for at least 90 days and one day during a wartime period
  • Veterans and surviving spouses must be age 65 or older
  • A surviving spouse must have been living with the veteran at the time of death and single at time of claim

  • To be eligible for the Aid & Attendance pension, veterans must require help with the activities of daily living. Visit the VA pension page for a full list of requirements.

    Elderlife Bridge Loan

Bridge loans provide great flexibility to seniors who don’t qualify for Medicaid or receive enough Social Security Income (SSI) to supplement initial costs. Elderlife bridge loans are designed to be a temporary solution, typically for periods less than two years, while permanent funding is sought out. Loans are based on credit worthiness, but several cosigners are allowed, and payments can be split amongst family members. Lenders typically require a plan for permanent funding be in place before approving a loan. The best cases for using a bridge loan include: moving into assisted living, selling a home or awaiting veterans benefits.

For more information about the Elderlife program, please call (888) 228-4500, email [email protected] or fill out an application online.
