We visited Wescourt in Saginaw. Based on the visit, we were very happy with what they did with the facility. It's very nice there. They have access to everything, like gardens. Even though they're in the city of Saginaw, they have a rural type of feeling. They have cottages for the independent part, one- and two-bedroom cottages that are separated. They're like little homes that are right on the front of the building so if they go over to dine for food, it's just across the driveway. They have 24/7 on-call alerts in all of their apartments, whether they were in the cottages or in the main building. One thing that my parents and my family like is that they allow you to choose to have extra help. You can purchase it from them, or if you have your own, they can come into the property. That was something nice, and the other ones didn't allow that. With what we experienced, I'd say the staff was all very nice and helpful. They have little bistros, little coffee shops that you could go to, a place for movies, and a hair salon. They also have transportation for medical appointments or other types of appointments within a certain radius. They have the alert that they wear around like a wristwatch for 24/7 contact. They have a nursing-help team on the premises.

I've been very happy with Wescourt, they take good care of my mom. They're very like safe and careful, 'specially with the coronavirus; they follow all the protocols consistently. There's good food there. There are generally a lot of activities, but not right now during the lockdown. The only issue I've had lately is that she hasn't had her carpets cleaned because of the coronavirus restrictions, but that's kind of challenging these days to have companies these days come into the facility. She used to do a lot of exercise classes, there's auctions where they get Westcourt box and they can bid on little prizes and things. They have rootbeer floats where they can get their blood pressure checked. They have a lot of outings where they can see fall leaves or that kind of stuff. They have people come in to sing and play the piano.

Wescourt was very nice and the apartments looked very nice as well. The staff who gave me the tour was also very nice and professional, she calls me all the time. I saw their dining area, they had all the tables set up and it's very nice. I didn't see any activity at the time because it was lunch time and everybody was having lunch. I haven't eaten there but the food looked good. They have amenities like a TV room, they have a church, a beauty shop, there's an activity room downstairs, a pool table, puzzles working area and a library area. My first impression of the place was that it was a community. People were sitting in a little foyer, they were playing a game, people were having lunch, and it just feels very homey. I went to several other places but this one is the one. The place itself was very nice and clean, and everyone was really friendly.

Bickford of Saginaw was nice, but it was more for people that are really worse off with their memory and our mom is still a little active. The place itself was nice, but it didn't appeal to us because it wasn't what we wanted. It wasn't a bad place. The staff member who accommodated us during the visit was very nice. Their dining area also looked nice.

Wescourt was very nice. Everybody was very friendly. The room was very nice, too. It was a very good experience and it felt homey. The dining room was very large, the food was okay, and the people we were sitting with were very friendly. Outside, they had a lot of flowers, which was very attractive. Parking was spacious. They had a lot of things going on and they had a big calendar full of activities.

Wescourt is a well-run community, it's very clean and the staff is friendly and helps you out any way they can. The rooms are nice, the food is good, and they have lots of activities for people in my mom's age group. They play bingo and they have options like poker, they sometimes go out on the bus to different places, they go to the doctors and shopping twice a week. The food is perfect, I ate there at least 3 times a week when my mom moved in. For the first 30 days when your loved one moves in, the family members eat for free. And after that, it has free lunch on Wednesday and it will cost you $5 per meal after the first 30 days. I have three family members there and my mom's friends are living there too, so she's pretty comfortable. In terms of the price, I would rate them a 3 which is very reasonable.

My mother-in-law is at Wescourt and things are going really well. The staff is very friendly and very helpful. There are lots of activities, and the dining room is beautiful. All three meals are served like you're at a fancy restaurant. The grounds are beautifully kept up. Her apartment is cute and has a nice window. It's a studio apartment, but it has a little porch, which she really enjoys. There are also one- and two-bedroom apartments, two bedrooms and two bathrooms, and little cottages. They have a library, an exercise room with workout equipment and a treadmill, a pool table, and a snack place available all day. They also allow families to eat there with the residents at lunch for free. They have a nice elevator to get furniture upstais and a shuttle bus that will take them on doctors' visits, the grocery store, the zoo, and on other trips. They have very good activity people. They have a wide variety of price ranges and they're very willing to work with you. They change and make her bed once a week, do light cleaning and vacuuming once a week, and wash her towels and sheets.

Wescourt is beautiful, the services are great, and we love it. We've been here for less than a week and it feels like home already. They have knitting and crocheting groups, card games, crossword puzzles, coloring, they bring people in to perform for us, there are field trips, they take you to your medical appointments, there's a singing group, and different religious worship services. The food is superb, and the staff has been great.

Our visit to Wescourt went fine and they were very nice. We had lunch there and the food was good. The place was very clean. The woman we talked to was very friendly and answered all our questions. It was well worth going. They provide all our meals and they have quite a few activities like shopping, movies, and entertainers. The people lived more like in a condo, a self-standing house with two bedrooms and two baths. It was very nice. It didn't have a setup for a full kitchen though, which was one of the things we were looking for.
Seniors in Saginaw benefit from the least expensive assisted living cost in Michigan. At $2,825, the cost is $375 below nearby Bay City and $1,875 less than comparable care in Midland. It’s also substantially lower than the rates paid in Lansing ($4,500), Flint ($3,950) and Battle Creek ($3,873). Assisted living costs a whopping $2,225 more per month in Ann Arbor, which has the highest average rate statewide ($5,050). Saginaw rates are also much more affordable than the state ($3,850) and national ($4,000) averages.
Senior care rates in a given city are influenced by factors other than geographic location, such as the skill level of care, total service hours and the type of care setting. The 24-hour skilled care provided by nursing homes and one-on-one care offered by in-home providers is reflected in the higher monthly rates for these types of services compared to assisted living. In-home care rates are deceivingly low in Saginaw because they don’t include the cost of food or housing-related expenses normally covered by assisted living room and board. The cost difference between in-home and assisted living increases significantly when these expenses are factored in.
The national Medicaid program ensures access to essential health care services for low-income Americans. The program is administered at the state level with oversight and joint funding provided by the federal government.
The Michigan Medicaid program, administered by the Department of Health and Human Services, provides coverage for over one-fifth of the state’s population, including almost half a million blind, disabled and elderly residents. Program enrollees receive wide-ranging benefits, including primary and specialty care, hospital and emergency care, diagnostic services such as lab tests and X-rays, preventive care, prescription medications and nursing home care.
Saginaw residents must be U.S. citizens or legal immigrants to qualify for Michigan Medicaid coverage for long-term care, and they must meet these additional requirements:
Optional State Supplementation
Saginaw seniors eligible for Supplemental Security Income can receive an extra monthly cash benefit through the Michigan Optional State Supplementation program. The benefit amount varies based on an applicant’s monthly income and living situation, but individuals may receive up to $950.30 and couples up to $1,900.60 per month.
To learn more or apply for SSI and Michigan OSS benefits, seniors can contact the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213.
Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly
The Great Lakes PACE program provides eligible Saginaw seniors with all-inclusive medical and community-based support services with the goal of preventing premature nursing home placement. To qualify for this program, applicants must be aged 55 or older and be assessed as eligible for nursing home admission but deemed able to safely live in the community with PACE-provided support services. Applicants can’t be currently enrolled in the MI Choices waiver or an HMO and must live within the program’s defined service area.
Those approved for coverage are evaluated by the PACE interdisciplinary team and receive an individualized care plan. Although the program doesn’t pay assisted living facility fees, it does cover a wide range of supportive services that can help lower a participant’s monthly care costs. Based on their assessed needs, participants may qualify for services such as:
Saginaw is home to five busy senior centers that welcome residents aged 60+ with a variety of recreational and educational activities. The centers provide a nutritious hot lunch plus diverse offerings such as bingo, billiards, chess and bridge games, chair exercise, tai chi, line dancing and crafting classes. Most centers organize holiday and birthday parties, seminars on aging-related topics, wellness checks, group outings and day trips.
The Saginaw County Commission on Aging offers a wide range of programs and services to help elderly residents aged 60 and older maintain their independence and a high quality of life. The agency’s information and referral staff is available to answer questions, provide information and connect callers with local services that match their needs. The SCCOA coordinates and oversees programs and services such as case management, care management for frail individuals at risk of nursing home admission, congregate dining, in-home support and door-to-door transportation. The agency also offers volunteer opportunities for seniors who want to stay active and engaged in their community. Saginaw County Commission on Aging
