I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Choosing an assisted living community for a parent with dementia is one of the most difficult decisions a family can make. My mother has been a resident at Arbor Terrace Senior Living in Greenbelt/Lanham for 9 months, and our experience has included some challenges (to be expected) but many positive moments. The greatest strength of Arbor Terrace has been the people. I would especially like to recognize Darlene, (the new Executive Director) Denise (Engagement Director), Miss Candace and Ms Renae, the receptionists, Sammie, Faye and Martins (med techs) Micquel, Jocelyn and Jerome-(housekeeping and maintenance). along with many other staff members who have shown genuine compassion, patience, and kindness toward my mother. They (including Ms Toinette) have taken the time to get to know her as a person, treated her with dignity and respect, and have often gone above and beyond to make her feel safe, valued, and cared for. Ms Denise and the engagement staff have worked hard to encourage socialization and participation in activities, which has been very important to my mother’s quality of life. Seeing her laugh with her cousin, who also resides there, participate in activities, and regain some confidence and independence has meant a great deal to our family. Since moving to Arbor Terrace, my mother’s health has been a challenge but with the assistance of Bertha and Mariatu (resident care coordination) she has stabilized. She has remained engaged socially and spiritually through the concerted efforts of staff. Ms. Denise has pulled my Mom in so that she feels purposeful and needed. The community itself is attractive, welcoming, and offers a variety of activities and opportunities for residents. No assisted living community is perfect, especially when caring for older adults with complex medical and cognitive needs. In our experience, Arbor Terrace always strives to do what’s best for the residents. I am deeply grateful to the many caregivers and team members who have cared for my mother with compassion, dignity, and love. I would choose Arbor Terrace again, with the understanding that family involvement remains an important part of achieving the best possible outcome for a loved one. Thank you to everyone at Arbor Terrace, named and unnamed, for your kindness which has made a real difference in my mother’s life.

I visited this facility

Arbor Terrace of Lanham accommodated me nicely. It was tranquil, everybody was nice, and it seemed like a rest home. The staff members were polite and amenable. They helped me out and showed me around. They showed me the rooms they had, they showed me the different games, and they talked about their activities. There were people coming in and doing different activities. There were also church services.

We like the physical layout and appearance of Arbor Terrace of Lanham. It's very well-kept, nicely furnished, and things were easily accessible to the people living there. We also liked the activities schedule and the residents there have positive things to say about it. They have a memory care unit that works with different stages of dementia. They serve three meals a day, there are also snacks in addition to that. They play Bingo, something similar to Jeopardy with board clues, a lecturer comes in from Maryland once a week and talks to the group, they do short strolls around the neighborhood, and once a week they have a theme afternoon. They had a masquerade going on when we were there. They also have music twice a week, bible studies, and a couple of religious denominations come in to do services on weekends. There's plenty of staff and they appear to be confident. They are very helpful with my mom, and whenever there's problem, they easily correct it. My mom says she likes the food and how the chef seasons things. I think we're getting a great deal for the price, and so far we're very pleased.

We selected Arbor Terrace. Everybody's very friendly, and it's quite cozy and not huge. The price is right as well. They had a middle court for people who like to sit outside. For memory care, they had the centralized eating facility, and for assisted living, they have more of a restaurant situation. They have a small bistro where you can get apples, cupcakes, and coffee. It just seemed like they were giving the people a lot personal care and work on keeping people involved in exercise or crafts. My mom is in the memory care. Everybody is engaged in doing something, and even the chef comes down to find out what your favorite meal is or would give a heads-up that a special meal is being served that day. The staff gets to know different people's habits and reports to us very quickly. They try to give a more gourmet approach than a cafeteria approach to the food. The chef really likes to cook and loves people. The rooms are very nice and clean, and they keep the hallways clean. Everybody has a little shadow box outside the room where they can put personal pictures for memory folks to know that it's their abode. They personalize a lot of things. They keep the place very beautiful with plants. It's small but adequate for the amount of people they accept.
