Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Lexington

Optional State Supplementation 
 
Low-income seniors in Lexington may qualify for assistance from the <a href="https://www.ssa.gov/policy/docs/progdesc/ssi_st_asst/2011/ky.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Optional State Supplementation (OSS) Program</a>. This program provides an additional monthly payment to seniors who already receive federal Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments. The maximum monthly OSS payment is $520 for single seniors. The state of Kentucky treats couples as two individuals and each can receive up to $520. This cash assistance can be used to pay for room-and-board costs in assisted living facilities. 
 
To receive assistance from the OSS program, seniors must be eligible for SSI payments. Seniors who have questions about this program can contact the <a href="https://www.ssa.gov/agency/contact/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Social Security Administration</a> by calling (800) 772-1213. They can also visit a local Social Security office. 
 
Veterans Affairs Aid and Attendance 
 
Veterans or their surviving spouses who live in assisted living facilities may be eligible for the <a href="https://www.benefits.va.gov/pension/aid_attendance_housebound.asp" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Veterans Affairs Aid and Attendance program</a>. This program provides an additional monthly allowance to seniors who are eligible for a VA pension, which can be used to help pay for care in an assisted living facility. 
 
The VA may add this allowance to a senior&rsquo;s pension if they need help from another person to perform certain daily activities, such as getting dressed or adjusting prosthetic devices. The pension may also be paid to seniors who have very limited vision or are bedridden due to a disability. 
 
Seniors can apply for this benefit in person at the <a href="https://www.benefits.va.gov/louisville/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Louisville Regional Office</a>&nbsp;or submit a written request to the <a href="https://www.benefits.va.gov/PENSION/resources-contact.asp" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Pension Management Center (PMC)</a> at the address below. Ashland Terrace originated in Lexington's 1849 cholera epidemic. At that time, we were known as the "Home of the Friendless" and served those left destitute by the sickness - largely women and children. As time passed and the cholera epidemic ended, we became known as the "Old Ladies Home," as only older women were left in residence. In December 1923, we officially incorporated as the "Old Ladies Home."

We opened at our current location, 475 S. Ashland Avenue, in the spring of 1960, still named the "Old Ladies Home." In the 1970s, the residents requested a name change to something more flattering, and we have since been known as Ashland Terrace.

As an independent living community, we require prospective residents to be:

We are located in the Hamburg area off I-75.  Families can take the residents anytime they wish out to restaurant, church and family events.  Our residents enjoy sitting out under the covered porch or in the sunshine and enjoy watching the horses at Patchen Wilkes horse farm - right out our back door.  We have a sidewalk around our community where they can walk and exercise.  Also our raised garden beds offer something for those that like to plant and harvest.

All of our food is home-cooked. We don't use a company that delivers pre-packed meals.  Our menus are thoughtfully and nutritiously planned.  Our breakfast is cooked-to-order from 7am - 9:30 am.  The noon meal is hot, hearty and largest meal of the day.  Dinner is lighter fare such as soup, salad or sandwich.

The ages tend to range between 80-95.  They like to attend the daily activities and events or spend time in their own rooms reading, watching TV, etc.

We have security cameras both inside and outside our communities throughout the common areas.  Our residents are provided a call pendant and an intercom.  Our communities stay locked from entry at all times - only those with their own codes can enter such as staff and family members.

Our staff complete an intense orientation training upon hiring and additional training throughout the year per the state guidelines with emphasis on dementia care. 

What ongoing senior care training does the staff receive?

We are two-three staff during the day until dinner time, then we have one person until the morning.  Due to our small size community this works beautifully.

We do not accept pets, but well-mannered pets are welcome to visit anytime.

We are not a memory care community. We are not considered as a locked down community.  We do provide all residents with a call pendant to wear and to press should they need any assistance.  We have security cameras throughout our common areas both inside and outside our community to monitor activity.  our community is locked from the outside at all times and only those with their own codes can enter.  All others have to ring the doorbell to enter.

We have limited transportation and need to know in advance for medical and dental appointments.  We can transport for shopping if given time to plan this outing.
