Assisted Living Costs in Peachtree City

The Genworth 2018 Cost of Care study reveals that assisted living in Peachtree City costs, on average, $3,390 per month. While this is slightly more expensive than the Georgia state average ($3,100), it’s considerably more affordable than the nationwide average ($4,000). Many other cities in north Georgia, including Athens ($3,350) and Gainesville ($3,500), are near to the cost of Peachtree City. In south Georgia, assisted living tends to be more affordable, with seniors in Augusta and Valdosta paying $2,950 and $3,000, respectively.

Note: Since senior care cost data for Peachtree City was not available, data for the closest major city, Atlanta, has been used.

Care Cost Comparison

Monthly senior care prices vary depending on many factors, including location and type of care. Peachtree City seniors who require a nursing home level of care pay an average of $6,753 per month. Private rooms in nursing homes are even more expensive at $7,057 monthly. In contrast, seniors who require assisted living care will pay much less at only $3,390 per month.

In-home services, such as home health aides, cost over $400 more per month than assisted living. It’s important to remember that seniors who opt for in-home services are also responsible for all their daily living costs, such as utilities and home maintenance; these costs are typically bundled into assisted living fees.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Peachtree City

Medicaid in Georgia

Medicaid is a federal-state program providing health coverage to over 65 million low-income people across the country, including pregnant women, people with disabilities and elderly adults. In Georgia, many basic health care needs are covered by Medicaid, such as physician services, surgical services and hospital services. Through two waiver programs, the state offers coverage for assisted living and other long-term care options. These two waivers are described in detail below.

In Georgia, seniors who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are automatically eligible for Medicaid. Other Georgia seniors may be eligible for the program if they:

  • Are U.S. nationals, U.S. citizens or immigrants with a satisfactory status
  • Earn less than $30,851 annually ($41,768 for couples)
  • Have less than $2,000 in assets ($3,000 for couples)

For the purposes of Medicaid eligibility, assets are items such as stocks and bonds, certificates of deposit and bank account balances. Many assets, including a person’s primary residence and one motor vehicle, are not counted.

In Georgia, there are many ways to apply for Medicaid. The state provides a convenient online application portal, but applications are also accepted in person at County Division of Family and Children Services offices. Seniors may choose to apply at their local Social Security Administration office.

For more information about Medicaid in Georgia, call (800) 436‑7442.

Community Care Services Program (CCSP)

The CCSP helps Georgia seniors avoid or delay moving into a nursing home. It provides coverage for a wide variety of services that can help seniors remain in their own homes or elsewhere in the community. These services include:

  • Adult day health care
  • Licensed assisted living facilities
  • Home-delivered services
  • Personal support services
  • Respite care

To receive these waiver services, seniors need to have a physician-verified need for nursing home care but want to live elsewhere. In addition, they have to be eligible for Medicaid. Seniors who are already participating in another Medicaid waiver program are not eligible for CCSP.

Seniors who are interested in this waiver can contact the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) at (866) 552-4464 to set up an assessment. The program has a waiting list, but a senior’s position on the list is based on their need for services, not just how long they’ve been waiting.

Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE)

SOURCE is similar to the CCSP in that it’s designed to help seniors stay out of nursing facilities. The program offers primary medical care, case management and long-term care services to frail elderly people who would otherwise require nursing home care. Depending on a senior’s needs, the services offered by the program may include assisted living services, home-delivered meals or personal support services.

Seniors may apply for SOURCE if they’re eligible for Medicaid and need a nursing home level of care. The toll-free number for Home and Community Based Services is (866) 552-4464. Since Georgia seniors can only participate in one waiver program at a time, seniors already enrolled in the CCSP cannot participate in SOURCE.

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living

VA Aid and Attendance Allowance

The VA Aid and Attendance allowance may help veterans and survivors with the costs of assisted living. This allowance is offered to seniors who receive a basic VA pension and need help with activities of daily living. Seniors who earn too much to receive the basic pension may still qualify for the Aid and Attendance allowance.

For veterans with no dependents, the basic VA pension pays a maximum of $13,535 per year, while seniors who qualify for the Aid and Attendance allowance may receive up to $22,577. This additional $9,042 can be very useful when paying for assisted living costs. It’s important to note that a senior’s VA pension will vary depending on their income; the more they earn, the lower the pension will be.

To apply for this increased pension amount, contact your local regional benefit office. For more information, call the Department of Veterans Affairs at (844) 698-2311.

Optional State Supplementation

The federal government provides monthly cash assistance to seniors with low incomes and few assets through the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. Single seniors may receive a maximum of $771 per month through this program, while couples may receive up to $1,157 per month.

Some states, including Georgia, provide additional funding to SSI recipients who live in assisted living facilities. This top-up funding, called optional state supplementation, can be used to help pay for room and board. In Georgia, individual seniors can receive a maximum of $20 per month, while couples can receive up to $40.

To learn more about this top-up funding, visit your local Social Security office or call (800) 772-1213.
