Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Morgantown

Medicaid in West Virginia

For low-income Americans who can’t afford medical insurance, Medicaid is a government-funded program that may cover the health care services they need. Medicaid in West Virginia is administered by the Department of Health and Human Services, Bureau for Medical Services.

West Virginia seniors eligible for Medicaid must have a total monthly income below $2,313, including employment wages, retirement, pensions, stock dividends, alimony and Social Security or disability payments. For couples, the individual income limit applies to each spouse.

Assets are limited to $2,000 for individuals and $3,000 for couples applying for benefits. Countable assets include cash, bank accounts, investments, real estate, stocks and bonds. A personal residence with equity less than $585,000 is exempt, along with a vehicle, burial trusts, life insurance, personal belongings and household furnishings.

West Virginia Medicaid Personal Care is available for those who are Medicaid-eligible and need help performing activities of daily living. Assistance is provided to eligible applicants whether they reside at home, a family member’s home or in an adult foster care or assisted living facility. Covered services can include assistance with personal hygiene, dressing, meals, nutrition counseling, light housekeeping and health-related tasks. Room-and-board costs for assisted living aren’t covered. To determine eligibility, seniors must have their physician complete a Personal Care Medical Necessity Evaluation Request
