Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in La Grange

Medicaid in Texas

Low-income Texas seniors may qualify for health care benefits through the state’s comprehensive Medicaid program that delivers services primarily through regional managed care organizations. Once enrolled, individuals are entitled to receive preventive and acute care, including physician visits, emergency services, inpatient hospital stays, prescription medications, diagnostic testing and transportation to medical appointments. Some seniors may also be eligible to receive coverage for dental, vision and hearing care.

Medicaid applicants must be legal Texas residents aged 65 or older with a monthly income of no more than $771 and less than $2,000 in assets. For married couples with both spouses applying, the limits are $1,057 per month in income and $3,000 in assets.

Seniors who demonstrate a medical need for 30 days or more of continuous care can also apply for Medicaid long-term care. Applicants must be aged 65 or older and meet the Medicaid income and asset guidelines. Certain asset exclusions apply, including a house, one car, small life insurance policies and burial funds.

To see if you qualify for Texas Medicaid, try the online screening tool. To apply for Medicaid online, visit Your Texas Benefits.

STAR+PLUS Waiver

Medicaid-eligible Texas seniors who aren’t already enrolled in a waiver program may qualify for services through the STAR+PLUS Home and Community-Based Services waiver. The STAR+PLUS program offers health care coverage and long-term assistance to seniors in need and gives individuals the freedom to select their own health plan. While the waiver is designed to provide services to seniors who wish to remain in their homes, it may also help with the cost of assisted living services.

Seniors can call the Medicaid hotline at (800) 252-8263 for more information about the STAR+PLUS waiver program or apply online at Your Texas Benefits.

Texas Community Care for the Aged and Disabled

The CCAD program is a non-Medicaid service designed to help at-risk Texas seniors maintain their independence and avoid placement in a nursing home. Managed by Texas Health and Human Services, this federally funded program delivers services to seniors in assisted living communities. The program covers the cost of care management and provides an aide to assist with activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing and grooming. The program doesn’t cover assisted living room and board expenses.

CCAD is open to legal Texas residents with monthly incomes below $2,313 and no more than $5,000 in assets. Married couples are limited to an income of $4,626 per month and $6,000 in assets. To qualify, individuals must be disabled or functionally impaired and demonstrate a need for assistance when performing activities of daily living. Seniors receiving similar benefits through Medicaid programs are not eligible to apply.

The Capital Area Aging and Disability Resource Center offers additional information on coverage and eligibility guidelines. Seniors can call (855) 937-2372 with questions or to apply.

  • Need assistance performing activities of daily living
  • Have vision limited to 5/200 or less in both eyes after correction or a visual field restricted to five degrees or less

When applying, individuals should supply a physician’s report with information detailing their qualifying condition.
