I Am A Friend Or Relative Of A Current/Past Resident

Had my mom in here for only a few months. There are some very caring people here - the activities director and the overall director are wonderful. Here is what I did not like - they keep the resident's rooms locked and their armoires locked. They can get a key made, but they have DEMENTIA so they lose them. So when you go over, you will see a lot of people with their heads on tables asleep. They get tired and have to ask to be let in their room. IF they remember to ask, they might be told no, and they might be told yes. So many times a resident would ask me to help them get in their room. It was very sad. Some of the staff was downright rude to the patients. I went there often and observed. They never had the nerve to do it to my mom while I was there, but I saw them do it to other patients. When a dementia patient complains, it is hard to know if they are telling the truth or imagining something. When my mom complained, I believed her because it was about a caregiver than I had seen be rude to other patients. They scolded the patients and bossed them around. I understand they need some bossing because they are confused, but you can do it without demeaning them and taking away what little dignity they have left. I heard some raised voices from caregivers. When we got ready to move, we had issues getting the medications released. There was one medication that was very important that she should have been getting daily that they were out of. I don't know how long they were out of it, but I suspect longer than they wanted to admit. Places like this are all sad because the patient usually wants to be home. But the place she is in now is so much better. I would not put her back in the Cottage due to them not having access to their own things and the lack of respect the patients get from staff.

We chose the Cottage for our loved one because of the kindness and caring shown by the staff and because we trust them to take care for our loved one like they would if it were their own family! It was a difficult decision and we've had our ups and down but when you're dealing with dementia and other problems I'm coming to believe that is just to be expected when you are on this journey. I have been very impressed with the kindness and compassion shown to the entire family. This has been a learning experience for us and although no place is perfect we trust the Cottage to give the best possible care available.
