Founded in 1753 by the Moravian Church, the city of Salem derives its name from the Hebrew word Shalom, meaning “peace.” The city of Winston was founded in 1849 and named after a local Revolutionary War hero. The United States Postal Service stepped in during 1889 and joined the two towns into what is now known as Winston-Salem, the fourth largest city in North Carolina.

Seniors can explore historical art exhibits at the Reynolda House Museum of American Art or view the latest modern art collections at SECCA, the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art. They may also attend concerts by the Winston-Salem Symphony, the oldest orchestra in the state, or enjoy a live performance from the Piedmont Opera.
