Founded in 1753 by the Moravian Church, the city of Salem derives its name from the Hebrew word Shalom, meaning “peace.” The city of Winston was founded in 1849 and named after a local Revolutionary War hero. The United States Postal Service stepped in during 1889 and joined the two towns into what is now known as Winston-Salem, the fourth largest city in North Carolina.
Winston-Salem is home to 229,617 residents with seniors age 65 and older accounting for nearly 14 percent of the population. Assisted living in Winston-Salem affords seniors a wide array of cultural activities, entertainment, medical and transportation options.
