Only costs in the California area are higher at $5,900 per month. Otherwise, seniors in Salisbury pay more for assisted living than those in the Hagerstown area ($5,045), the Baltimore area ($4,250) and Cumberland ($3,650). In nearby out-of-state cities, seniors pay more in Dover, Delaware, ($5,418) but less in the Virginia Beach area ($4,676).
The Cost of Assisted Living in Surrounding Areas
Senior care costs vary widely in Salisbury depending on the type of care received. Starting at the low end, part-time care administered at an adult day health center costs $1,681 on average. This is followed by homemaker services ($3,813) and home health aides ($4,195). These costs include a caregiver’s assistance within the home but not extraneous living costs, such as meals, rent, utilities and home maintenance.
While the cost of care in an assisted living facility is higher at $5,315 per month, these fees typically cover living expenses not included with home health care. The most expensive senior care option in Salisbury is full-time skilled nursing home care at $9,733 per month.

Seniors aged 65 and older seeking long-term care who wish to live at home or in an assisted living community rather than a nursing home may be eligible for care through a Long-Term Services and Supports waiver.
Home and Community-Based Options Waiver

Increased Community Services Program
Similar to the Community Options waiver, the Increased Community Services program provides health care services and assistance with activities of daily living to seniors who live in a nursing home but would like to transition back into the community. This program allows individuals whose income is too high to qualify for the Community Options waiver to enroll by paying income in excess of 300% of SSI benefits toward their care costs. Participants must also have assets below the $2,000 or $2,500 maximum limits (depending on their eligibility category).
Benefits of ICS are nearly identical to services provided through the Community Options waiver.

Optional State Supplementation
Salisbury seniors who are eligible for SSI payments, are at least 65 years old or blind or disabled and live in an assisted living facility may receive a state supplementation of $184 per month in addition to their federal assistance. This amount includes an $82 allowance for personal needs.
To qualify for SSI, individuals can earn no more than the federal benefit rate of $771 per month, and married couples can earn no more than $1,157. Assets, which exclude one’s home, primary vehicle and personal belongings, may not exceed $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a married couple.

Senior Assisted Living Group Home Subsidy
In Maryland, a state subsidy of up to $650 per month is available to help certain seniors who would otherwise live in a nursing home afford to live in a small assisted living group home for four to 16 residents.

Wicomico County senior centers are available to residents aged 60 and older. The county provides low-cost meals, transportation to and from the centers and stimulating social activities, such as bingo games, exercises, guest lectures and live music performances.
