We're hoping to get my sister in Brookdale Mandarin. They could improve in being more responsive to questions. We're going back and forth on whether or not they'll take her secondary Medicaid insurance to help her pay for room and board. The staff at the location is saying one thing, and the insurance provider is saying another. So it's just really their knowledge of which insurances they can accept and which ones they cannot. The tour experience was perfectly fine.

I liked Brookdale Mandarin Assisted Living. It was clean and it looked like a four-story hotel. They had lots of activities and lots of staff members. The apartments looked nice. The staff member during the tour was knowledgeable and friendly. They have a swimming pool, they do your laundry, they offer three meals, and have snacks available throughout the day.

We chose the Palms at Ponte Vedra for mom to live, and so we’re very happy thus far. She will get a 1-bedroom with a living room and a kitchen, and we’re happy with that. We found the one available seemed a little small, but we’re going to give it a try. The only thing we would change if we could, is the bathroom doesn’t come off of the bedroom but the kitchen, so you have to leave the bedroom and go around the corner to go to the bathroom, and my mother has a walker. They do have 1-bedroom, but it’s larger and more expensive on the monthly rent. They have tons of stuff, cards, exercise programs, Bingo, and movies. They have 3 meals with beautiful menus, beautiful dining room, and ice cream parlor. They have bible study once a week, church on Sundays, and transportation to a church of your choice if you choose to go out. They have such a nice selection and variety that she will be able to choose and be as active as she chooses to be. We had lunch there, it was excellent, the menus for breakfast is pretty steady, and I think you can ask if you don’t see something that you like.

I was very impressed with The Palms at Ponte Vedra. It's a brand-new, lovely community. Amenities are pretty much what everybody else has. They do laundry and linen, provide food, but the rooms aren't quite as big. Also I wanted to be close to Mayo Clinic and Hospital because I have been told by the doctor that I have a type of cancer. However, The Palms is much further away in comparison to the other communities.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Saint Johns County

Medicaid in Florida

Medicaid is a nationwide health insurance program that provides limited health coverage to Americans who have both a low income and minimal assets. Medicaid is jointly funded by the federal and state governments, and in Florida, Medicaid is administered by the Agency for Health Care Administration, a branch of the Florida Department of Children and Families

Seniors who are permanent residents of Florida may qualify for free Medicaid coverage if they have an income of less than $2,313 a month as a single applicant and under $4,626 when applying as a couple. Income from all sources must be counted, including pensions, investment interest, alimony and wages.

To qualify, Medicaid also requires that individual seniors have less than $2,000 in countable assets ($3,000 for a couple). Assets include all cash, bank account balances, stocks, bonds and investment real estate. Exempt assets include non-revocable burial trusts, clothing, household furnishings, one vehicle and a home used as a primary residence for the applicant and valued at $585,000 or less.

Florida seniors aged 65 and older who meet the criteria for Medicaid coverage and require the type of care normally provided in a nursing home may be eligible for additional support services through the Florida Statewide Medicaid Managed Care, Long-Term Care Program. This program helps prevent or delay nursing home placement among Florida seniors by providing medically necessary services in an assisted living setting.

As per federal law, eligibility for the SMMC LTC program is determined by the Comprehensive Assessment and Review for Long-Term Care Services preadmission screening program. A designated CARES assessor evaluates each applicant’s needs, and a registered nurse or physician reviews the assessment and recommends services.

If approved for the SMMC LTC program, services may include:

  • Adult day health services
  • Attendant and personal care
  • Homemaker
  • Medication administration and management
  • Medical supplies and equipment
  • Intermittent and skilled nursing
  • Occupational, physical, speech and respiratory therapy

For more information on Florida Medicaid for seniors and the SMMC LTC program, contact the Saint Johns County Elder Helpline at (888) 242-4464 or the Agency for Health Care Administration at (877) 711-3662.

This SSI top-up provides up to $78.40 for an individual and up to $156.80 for a couple receiving SSI payments and residing in an assisted living facility. Note that OSS cannot be combined with Medicaid benefits for assisted living.

Veterans Aid and Attendance and Housebound Benefits

Veterans and their survivors who qualify for a regular VA pension and are either housebound or need daily assistance from another person may be eligible for benefits through the Aid and Attendance and Housebound program.

Under the Aid and Attendance program, applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria:

Note that applicants who already receive a VA disability pension are ineligible for these benefits, and benefits from Aid and Attendance cannot be combined with Housebound benefits.
