Bradenton is located in Manatee County, on the Gulf Coast of Florida. As of 2012, the population was estimated to be 50,672. The city was founded in 1842 as Bradentown, then combined with the city of Manatee to be incorporated as Bradenton in 1943. Bradenton experiences warm winters and hot summers, though the sea breeze comes in off the gulf. Retirement communities in Bradenton are expected to grow as the city is currently experiencing a construction boom.
Seniors in Bradenton are served by Manatee County Aging Services, which provides an elder helpline to help seniors find the information and services they need. The Emergency Home Energy Assistance for the Elderly Program helps households that has at least one family member over the age of 60 to pay past due notices and deposits, with eligibility determined by household size and income. In addition to these programs, Aging Services provides homemaker services, including housekeeping, meal planning and preparation, as well as shopping, personal care, and home care to those who qualify. Home delivered meals and medical transportation are also available. Those who qualify can also take advantage of the Medicaid Waiver Home and Community Based Services, which can cover everything from pest control to medical supplies.
Seniors who enjoy art will have plenty to do in Bradenton. There is a portion of the city that, thanks to special zoning laws, allow residents to both live and work in their homes. This has resulted in this neighborhood now being home to numerous small studios, galleries, and restaurants. This area is known as the Village of the Arts, and is the largest arts district on the Gulf Coast. ArtCenter Manatee also offers a place for art education and for local artists to showcase and sell their pieces. Theater lovers will enjoy seeing the Manatee Players performing at the Manatee Performing Arts Center. This group currently holds first place in both the Florida and Southeast theatre conferences, as well as first place in the American Association of Community Theater competition. Bradenton is also home to the South Florida Museum, an all in one museum, planetarium, and aquarium. It is home to Snooty, Manatee County’s official mascot, who is the oldest manatee in captivity and believed to be the oldest manatee in the world.
Manatee Memorial Hospital is located in the heart of Bradenton. Manatee Memorial is home to a behavioral health center, a breast care center, an orthopedic and spine center, rehabilitation services, and a stroke center. They also offer advanced cardiac diagnostics and interventions in their heart and vascular center, and are an accredited chest pain center by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care.
Manatee County Area Transit (MCAT) is the primary public transportation service serving seniors residing in Bradenton retirement communities and other area residents and visitors. MCAT offers a Handy Bus service, providing accessible transportation options to qualified individuals who are unable to use the fixed route bus system. There’s also a Senior Wheels program serving seniors age 60 and older in Manatee County.
