I visited this facility

The staff at Redwood Retirement Residence was very accommodating. It was a very clean place, and the rooms were very nice, but it just did not accommodate my dog. They would take her in there, but she wouldn't have any place to go outside by herself or anything like that, so we decided against that place. The meals are included too, and they have exercise programs, and a beauty salon. You can go and get food at any time you want, and they also have a lot of walking areas outside. Everything is included in the price. Although it's an older building, and it's showing wear and tear, the facility was well kept and very nice.

Redwood Retirement Residence was really nice. It was a great experience. The person was super helpful. She went above and beyond to show us the community that they're providing. It was clean and very friendly. It sounded like they really care about their residents. I don't remember any activities because it's Covid, so a lot of things were temporarily closed. The facility looked very clean, and people that were walking around seemed happy, nice and friendly. I'm assuming that if they're very happy, nice and friendly, then that is a good community there for them. I remember that they have very good parking, which is very important to us. The staff members were great.

Redwood Retirement Residence was great. It was beautiful and the staff who assisted me was excellent. She was very friendly, she took me on a nice tour and she explained everything. It was a wonderful visit. The dining area was nice, everyone was eating, and they were having a holiday dinner. They were doing bingo, too.

I am/was a resident of this facility

I stayed in Redwood. It's very good. I like it there, but I need to move because my brother said that one day I couldn't transfer from my chair to the bed and I would have to go to the hospital. The food was good. The staff members were very friendly and very helpful. The building was very nice.

I visited this facility

Redwood Retirement Residence was a nice community, but there's not a whole lot of outdoor space. The more you pay, the nicer and bigger the apartment is. I looked at the studio and the apartment with the bedroom, living room, and kitchenette. You get what you pay for. The laundry room, library, and dining room seemed nice enough. They were having an entertainment and cooking event when I was there. They make an effort to keep it interesting, active, and the people were quite friendly. The staff I met was very friendly and gave me a lot of their time.

Redwood Retirement Residence was really lovely and homey. It's just out of my range at the moment. The staff member was very helpful, very informative, very caring, and patient. It was a nice visit. The staff went to the kitchen and got me and my daughter lunch, and that was very sweet. The complex was just very nice. I've always liked that place. I'm just waiting until I can afford to go there. It's an excellent place.

I visited this facility

We ate dinner at Redwood Retirement Residence. It was very nice. The food was very good. The apartments were a good size. The price was good. I was very happy with it. It's independent living, but if you want assisted living, you have to go to home health care outside and purchase it that way. They have arts and crafts, they serve three meals a day, and they have a washer-and-dryer on each floor for free. The staff was very friendly. The lead sales person was very positive. She talked to us nicely.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother-in-law is presently in The Springs of Napa. It's pretty good. They have lots of activities. Everything is great. However, the dining room could use a little help. The amenities are great, including the transportation and activities for the residents.

Care Cost Comparison

Various factors affect monthly rates for senior care in Napa, including the intensity of the care services provided and where they’re received. Adult day health services provided in group centers on weekdays cost the least ($2,167), while 24/7 skilled care in a nursing home is the most expensive option ($9,962). Rates for in-home care services and assisted living in a residential setting fall in between. To accurately compare the midrange care options of homemaker ($5,911), home health aide ($5,053) and assisted living ($5,425), daily living costs must be considered. Average rates for in-home services only represent the hours of care provided, whereas the price charged by assisted living facilities typically includes room and board. Those staying at home are responsible for food, utilities, upkeep, property taxes and other household expenses, which can increase seniors’ total monthly costs significantly.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Napa

Medicaid in California

Medicaid is the nation’s largest health insurance program, serving over 65 million people from coast to coast. It’s designed to provide low-income Americans with access to vital health care services. The program is jointly funded and overseen by the federal government and administered by each state.

Qualifying for Medicaid in California

In California, U.S. citizens and legal immigrants aged 65 or older or aged 64 or younger with disabilities are eligible for coverage through the state Medicaid program known as Medi-Cal. They must meet the following financial requirements:

  • Single applicants must have no more than $1,242 in monthly income and own $2,000 or less in countable assets
  • Married couples applying jointly must have $1,682 or less in monthly income and $3,000 or less in countable assets

Medi-Cal counts income from all sources, including wages, pensions, disability and Social Security benefits and investment dividends. Not all assets count toward the limits. Exceptions include:

  • A primary, owner-occupied home
  • Personal effects
  • Household goods
  • One vehicle

Napa residents who meet the eligibility requirements for Supplemental Security Income automatically receive full-scope Medi-Cal coverage. Those who need long-term care in a nursing home and meet the Medi-Cal functional guidelines qualify for coverage regardless of income.

Exceptions to Medi-Cal Income and Asset Requirements

When only one married spouse needs Medi-Cal long-term care coverage, the federal and state laws in place prevent spousal impoverishment and may lower the applicant’s monthly income and countable asset levels. These laws stipulate that the non-applicant may keep up to $3,160.50 of their spouse’s monthly income and up to $126,420 in joint assets as living and resource allowances.

Medi-Cal offers a share of cost plan for those who exceed the income limits. To qualify through the plan, applicants must spend down their excess monthly income on allowable medical expenses to reach the required threshold.

Napa residents can apply for Medi-Cal coverage online or contact Covered California at (800) 300-1506.

Medi-Cal Assisted Living Waiver

Assisted living isn’t a covered benefit through Medi-Cal, but the state does offer an Assisted Living waiver to give eligible seniors the option of living in a community setting instead of an institutional nursing home. The waiver doesn’t cover the cost of room and board but does pay for certain support services provided in participating, licensed assisted living facilities such as:

  • Transition assistance to move from a nursing facility
  • Assistance with daily living activities
  • Prepared meals and snacks
  • Laundry and housekeeping
  • Social and recreational programming
  • Medication administration assistance
  • Skilled nursing care
  • Transportation

To qualify for the ALW program, applicants must be eligible for full-scope Medi-Cal with no share of cost and aged 21 or older. They must also require a nursing-home level of care but be assessed as able to safely live in a noninstitutional setting.

The ALW isn’t offered in Napa County, but seniors willing to relocate can still apply. Currently, the program is available in nearby Contra Costa, Sacramento, Sonoma and 12 other counties throughout the state. Because the program isn’t an entitlement under Medi-Cal, approved applicants may be placed on a waiting list to receive services.

Napa residents who wish to apply for the ALW can contact a Care Coordination Agency in their preferred participating county.

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living

State Supplemental Payment

Seniors aged 65 or older and disabled adults eligible for SSI benefits may also qualify for the State Supplemental Payment. This monthly cash benefit can be used to help pay for assisted living room and board or other expenses. Napa seniors can qualify for both benefit programs if they’re American citizens or legal residents and meet these financial limits:

  • $771 in monthly income if single or $1,157 as a married couple
  • $2,000 in total assets if single or $3,000 if married

The exact benefit level received depends on an applicant’s living situation and monthly income. The maximum monthly combined benefit amounts available to those residing in assisted living facilities are $1,194.37 for singles and $2,388.74 for married couples.

To apply for SSI and SSP benefits, Napa residents can contact the Social Security Administration at (800) 772-1213.

Reverse Mortgage

Homeowners in Napa aged 62 or older in need of extra income to pay for assisted living expenses for one spouse may consider the option of a reverse mortgage. In contrast to a traditional mortgage with monthly payments made to a lender, this kind of loan provides an equity-based monthly check to the homeowners. When both borrowers have moved out or the home is sold, the full mortgage balance must be repaid. Eligibility and the amount received each month depends on a couple’s available equity and ages.

To learn more about reverse mortgages, interested Napa seniors can contact Elderlife Financial Services at (888) 228-4500.
