My mother-in-law has been a resident at the Phoenix at Harrisonburg for over a year and has really enjoyed it and highly recommends. Management is great – always helps to resolve problems. Staff are extremely helpful and very good at what they do. Beautiful clean facility – that is well-kept inside and out. I love seeing their seasonal décor in the lobby area. Everything in the facility is easy for her to navigate with her rollator. The maintenance guy is excellent and always quick to hang items on the wall when asked. The chef is always open to meal suggestions and feedback. The Phoenix location is perfect – very close to the hospital which is convenient for doctor appointments. Mother-in-law really enjoys the craft activities and bus trips (some of her favorites include Gift and Thrift, library, getting ice cream, Green Valley Book Fair, and looking at Christmas lights). Activities and outings have all increased since the Phoenix at Harrisonburg has grown. She also enjoys it when outside groups come for activities – such as musicians and local schools. My husband and I have attended various activities during her stay and have really enjoyed them – such as Christmas Open House, Thanksgiving family meal, bingo, family breakfast, Valentine’s Day dance, and Mother’s Day tea. She loves the snacks and drinks put out in the bistro area for the residents. We have really enjoyed using the activity room for larger family get-together’s – layout and ability to reserve makes it super easy and convenient for our holiday meal. Phoenix is best fit for our needs.

Bellaire at Stone Port is a beautiful, fairly new facility that's only a year or two old. They have a big lobby and the director of sales and marketing talked with us. My husband went a couple of weeks ago with his caseworker from the community services board and he loved it. He has a very nice room, which is a studio with a small refrigerator and a microwave. You can take your own furniture. It has a very nice bathroom with a safety equipped shower, stool, and a handheld thing. They have a lovely dining room, a library, an exercise room, and a little coffee bar that's open 24 hours a day. It's very nicely landscaped and has a nice view. I was very impressed with it and all the people that I met there. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They have menus with delicious-looking food. He's up on the second floor, and they have elevators. They have a lot of activities. I'm very happy with what I saw.

I visited Bellaire at Stone Port. It has a very nice layout, I liked it, it made people feel at home, but mother could not afford it. The staff was very nice, and very helpful. I loved the way the dining area was set up. I saw the library, a place where they could watch TV, and the gym.

Bellaire at Stone Port was very nice. They also have memory care there. It's very clean, very new looking, and really lovely. They had sinks in their rooms and the design and layout were lovely. The dining area was beautiful and it looked like a restaurant. They had soft chairs and places for activities, puzzles, fireplaces, TV, library, and kitchen where they can help. They don't do their laundry altogether; they do it separate. They will help them or the residents can do it or a family member can help. They have laundry facilities located outside in little areas accessible to the residents. The staff was very nice and very friendly. I have no complaints at all. I saw people around relating to different people. They all seemed very interactive, communicating, and respectful of one another and also the residents.

We really liked Brookdale Harrisonburg. There was not that many people there, but they have their own rooms. Residents get a menu for their meals, which was nice. They had another section for dementia residents, or ones that needed more than just assisted living, but we didn't go in that section. The lady showed us one of the sample rooms and we went into one of the rooms that a resident lives in. We only talked to the staff member that gave us the tour, Jennifer, and one other lady who was in charge of the section, and she was really nice. It's not like a nursing home where you have two patients in a room. They had some rooms that held two residents, and some of the residents were in private rooms. I didn't see anything wrong with the place. It's nice to go and take the tour because it gives you some idea of what to look forward to. The lady who showed us around said she would talk to my mother and tell her what to expect and things like that, which I thought was nice. She said we could bring her in to visit if we wanted during mealtime so we could all eat there. They did have a menu and the menu sounded really good. What we saw we approved of. The residents were playing Bingo while we were there and they also were making wreaths to put on their doors. Jennifer said they have about seven activities going on a day.
The median cost of assisted living in Harrisonburg for a single-occupancy apartment is $4,100/month (Genworth - 2018). This monthly cost typically includes rent, utilities, dining, housekeeping and transportation.
