What is a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist?

Certified Aging-in-Place Specialists (CAPS) are trained professionals that create custom home modifications and solutions for the aging-in-place population. Offered through the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), the CAPS program focuses on business management, customer service, and technical skills necessary to assist seniors with home remodeling. These specialists often collaborate with contractors, interior designers and occupational therapists to help senior adults navigate their homes safely and independently.

What Do Certified Aging-in-Place Specialists Do?

Certified Aging-in-Place Specialists are equipped to manage common home projects ranging from major remodels to simple changes, including:

  • Installing non-slip flooring
  • Securing grab bars and railings throughout the home
  • Widening doorways to fit wheelchairs and walkers
  • Installing walk-in tubs
  • Updating lighting
  • Fastening down rugs to prevent slipping
  • Replacing standard light switches with toggle or rocker-type switches
  • Installing stairlifts
  • Raising the dishwasher for easier access

Who Should Work With a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist?

CAPS work with a variety of individuals that have different levels of need. Whether you’re planning ahead for retirement, stepping in to help your elderly parents, or looking for a solution to an immediate safety concern, these specialists are the most knowledgeable when it comes to aging-in-place. Consider the following signs that it might be time to work with a Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist:

  • History of previous falls, trips or other accidents inside the home
  • Difficulty independently completing activities of daily living (ADLs), such as bathing
  • Neglecting household responsibilities
  • Concerning changes in physical appearance or hygiene
