I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

My mother was at Carmel Place where I was only paying $2,100 a month. This was a retirement home and the reason I had to move her was because there were times she fell. They would send an ambulance for her and 90% of the time, there was really nothing wrong with her. All they had to do was pick her back up and she's okay. If it hadn't been for that, she'd still be here. They had activities from 6:00 in the morning until 8:00 in the evening. They had them constantly on the go. They had the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts come and sing in the evenings, and they would have an Elvis guy come in and do an impression. It was continuous. They did things for them all the time and she loved that. At 8:00 at night, they would put on a movie for the ones who wanted a movie, and that would take them all the way to 10:00. They did activities with them. However, when they fall, if they could be able to pick them up and see if they're hurt or if not, then let it go, that would be preferable. Don't send an ambulance every time because that gets to be aggravating. They'd call us and we'd have to go get her out of the hospital and that's a $700 ride over there to the hospital. She was locked in at $2,100 because I paid 1-1/2 times her rent one time and they had locked her in at that and it never went up at that point. The 10% every year would not go up anymore.

My father is at Carmel Place. What I like the most is they're really on top of my dad getting his medical together and everything moved there. They really helped as far as getting his dialysis moved and that's the main thing, because he was coming from another state. They've been very helpful. Whenever I need help with or information with, they've been really good with providing me with the information I need, where I need to go, and who I need to call. The facility is nice and well kept. It's a real good value. That's one of the biggest things that attracted me, the value. They have a library, a TV room with a big screen TV, two laundry rooms on each floor, and transportation.

We chose Carmel Place because of the price and the location. The food was good, and they have good activities that keep the residents busy.

I visited this facility

We toured Carmel Place. It's a really nice tour, a beautiful facility, and the staff was great. They showed us around. Mother liked the layout and things of that nature as well. The staff was very friendly, very detailed, and very knowledgeable. We looked at a model or a guest suite. They're more like apartments. It's very easy to move around.

We had lunch at Carmel Place, and it was good. We looked at one of the bedrooms and we liked it. It's comparable to the other ones we looked at. We could get by with the 1-bedroom. They had a couple of pieces of equipment in their gym. They offer three meals. The facility was real nice.

I am/was a resident of this facility

I'm living in Carmel Place. I've been here over a year, and it's a homey, comfortable place, but they don't have enough servers and housekeepers, and that causes a major issue at dinnertime because the housekeepers also have to be servers. I don't have a problem with food per se since they have all kinds of three meals a day, and they also have things to choose from. I'm pretty satisfied. Once in a while they'll get something that's a little crazy, but my understanding is that the recipes come from corporates and the chefs really don't have much leeway in changing things. I'm quite comfortable with the activities, but I wish we had a pool. Sometimes I wish we have more educational things because there's a distinct group of people here that are independent and carry a conversation, then you have the group that's dementia and Alzheimer's, and you have another group with wheelchairs, Mobis, and walkers, and it appears in my opinion, we're getting more and more Mobis and I understand you can't keep them out, but it's just like we better be able to still walk and do things because it becomes dangerous in the hallways. We have Bingo, a nice library that I'm involved with, weekly trips to restaurants and Walmart, different things like that to get us out, some cultural things and plays from colleges, and they bring in people for music, although it's not necessarily my type of music because it's mostly for people who are 90 years old, so we need more variety.

Carmel Place was probably more convenient with me. I was not as impressed with the staff, and it was not affordable for her. However, I felt good about it. I actually had two friends that had their parents there, and they gave good recommendations, but then the affordability was not within her ability. The rooms were fine. They were nice and clean. I did not people mingling around.

Carmel Place was good. The general appearance was very lovely. Everything was clean. However, most of the people were quite elderly and not very responsive anymore. The staff members were very helpful. They answered our questions and gave us a very complete tour. The dining area looked very welcoming.

I visited this facility

Carmel Place was more like an apartment complex for elderly people. They do assist when needed, but it's not like they have certain people that they have to assist all the time. It's more like they have their own apartment so I wasn't quite prepared for that but I liked it. I think my mom would've liked it a lot. They had different kinds of apartments or rooms. She could have had one with a porch, which she would've liked very much, privately. They even had ones with little kitchenettes, which she would've liked as well. You go to the dining room to eat your main meals, but she could've kept her snacks and things in her little kitchenette. She would not be able to afford that, even though it was very nice. The staff was very nice and very knowledgeable. He was really good, and answered all my questions. They were getting ready to play bingo or some games in the room off of the dining room at that time.

I did go to Carmel Place. The staff told me about what they do, but I didn't see any activities. They do painting, they take them out on outings and shopping trips, and they also do some ongoing classes that they offer in terms of art activities. It was OK.

I toured Carmel Place. It was very nice, I liked it, it looked like they took care of their people pretty well, and the staff was very nice. It gave me a home feeling, and I liked the area where it's at, it's pretty quiet over there. I think they did have amenities. I looked at a suite.

I did an in-person visit to Carmel Place. I think the staff was probably the one I was most impressed with, the staff was very, very personable, lots of interaction, it's obvious that they had the residents foremost in their mind, so good care, they take such good care. The rooms were clean, and customized to make it personable. The amenities were clear of obstacles, so people could get around including wheelchairs.

My father-in-law is in Carmel Place. Everything is going fine. The staff is good, they've been very helpful and interactive with us and it's been a good experience so far. It might be a little dated, but it's comfortable and fine for the residents. He hasn't been participating in many of the activities because he's just not interested in going out in the group. They bring musicians in and they have movies and he's actively involved at the facility. He's been there for four weeks now and he is comfortable. We had a few issues, but it was mostly having to do with him. We looked at a ton of places, and it was by far the facility that had the best value. It's all inclusive, which is great, because some of the places we looked at had a renter's fee and all these things in addition to it. This place is a good value for the money.

I Am A Friend Or Relative Of A Current/Past Resident

From our families' experience, The staff has been responsive & kind to our needs. I do think their hands may be a bit tied by corporate restraints re: improvements, dining programs, and activities. We see a shift in more active and truly independent residents, our family member being one- hoping this continues! Nice apartments and flexibility of lease/rent was very attractive to us. Great location. Needs updating tho throughout building (interiors, unit finishes).

Carmel Place was nice and the people were wonderful, but it wasn't quite as nice as some of the ones we saw. They had a number of activities and the staff was great. It's just a little bit older facility. The rooms were older and dingier, but they're clean and well kept. They need refurbishing of the interior.

I wouldn’t waste my time with Carmel Place. There was a guy there that chain-smoked cigarettes in his room and you can smell it through the walls. If he fell asleep or he was too drunk, he'd probably wipe out quite a few of the seniors in the place. They have a prestigious name, but the place isn't prestigious. Nobody should smoke in a senior citizen home. They should go outside to smoke their cigarettes. I was not impressed with the rooms. They were too small. To me, it looked like a place where people are waiting to die.

I visited this facility

Carmel Place was awful. When I walked in, the first thing I saw was very dim lighting. It looked like I was going into a rec hall. It was old. The furniture was old and dark. There was nothing appealing at all. There were no beautiful hedges, flowers, or trees outside. It looked like a warehouse. There was nothing inviting about the place whatsoever. The odor was horrific. There was a smell of mildew or mold that you couldn't get past. We walked into a 1-bedroom apartment and the kitchen was in the middle of the living room. It had a wet bar, a small counter, a microwave, a refrigerator, and a couple of cabinets, but there was no stove. They had one room on each floor with a stove, so if you wanted to make a roast, you'd have to go to a separate room down the hall around the corner. They did not have a washer-dryer in their apartment as well. There was a dining room which looked fine, but it was $400 added on to your rent every month and the 1-bedroom was $2,300 a month. They had amenities and activities, card games, Bingo, and different outings. The rooms were horrible. With the 1-bedroom I'd have to sell my furniture because there was not room for anything. It was so small. The lady that showed me around was very nice and very knowledgeable, but she didn't have anything to offer.
