1. Oxbow never provided boutique services as advertised. 2. Things became progressively worse after the owners opened up a second facility: our father\'s wallet and cell phone were stolen; the weekend care was minimal requiring us to hire our own private nurse; and we enlisted the help of a social worker. 3. Approximately 6 weeks before our father died, the owners suggested that we find a new residence for him. He had lived at Oxbow for 10 years. 4. Only two hours after our father died, one of the owners called to tell us she was \"securing\" the belongings and that we needed to clear out the room \"in the next few days.\" This was a passive-aggressive way of saying to clear the room immediately in order that they could find another resident to pay over $13,000 per month. We never received a sympathy card or message extending condolences. We deeply regret our decision to place our parents at Oxbow.

My mother was the resident in this facility. They had Netflix but it took 2 months for them to get it hooked up. It took me threatening to reduce the fee paid to them to get them to get it working correctly. At one point they let her go 9 days without bathing her. They had several employees who had trouble transferring her from a chair to her bed and vice versa. Most of the time for Sundays lunch it was served cold. I would normally get there to visit her on Sundays and at 9:30 she would still be in her pajamas without having had any breakfast. The house is old and needs a good cleaning and up-dating. I will have to say the employees were very nice to her. But the real kicker was receiving a bill for the next month when she had already passed away. I WOULD NOT recommend this place for family or friends. Thankfully she was there only 4 months.

My father and I really like Bear Canyon Estates. It's a good one. They have a library and some books up there, a TV room on the bottom floor, and the dining room looks nice. The staff even went down to my father's old place to help sign him up. She's been really helpful. It's a very decent, nice place. They seem to be taking care of the people there.

My mother-in-law is currently staying in Brookdale Valencia. It's fine, but she doesn't like it there because it's too big. It's not very personable, especially with this COVID situation. She's very lonely, and they're not doing anything to make sure she's not. This has really been a very bad experience, and it's been really hard for her. They have a tiny exercise area, a hairdresser that comes in on Wednesdays, and they have a lady that does exercises in the morning.

Very disappointed after moving in. Not what the Director of Marketing presented it to be. Too expensive for what you get. Now we can see how run down the place is getting to be. The Executive Director makes promises and doesn’t deliver. The Billing is messed up a lot especially after they raised the prices. There’s a lot of Directors and staff “turn over” which concerns the residents. It seems the ones Residents really like leave or are let go. Not sure what’s going on but we think it’s a management problem. Be careful if you’re thinking about moving in and learn Spanish so you can communicate with staff. They are more interested in your money than your care. There are better places than this one.

I visited this facilityReview of The Woodmark at Uptown

The Woodmark at Uptown is a bit more institutional than some of the others. The rooms themselves were very nice, but it didn't seem like the people were enjoying themselves or happy. I didn't see much interaction between the staff and the people. There was a bathroom that was near the cafeteria, and when I first went in there was blood on the floor. I thought hopefully it will get cleaned up quickly. But around the edges of the bathroom, it didn't look like they cleaned well. When I was getting ready to leave I went back to the bathroom, and it was cleaned up within an hour. My impression of it is that it's not cleaned as well as it should.

I like my little 1-bedroom apartment at Bear Canyon Estates. It's just the right size, and the price is very reasonable. It's very clean and attractive. They have plenty of activities that you can be involved in especially this Christmas. They have a bible study class, choir, games, and they can take you to concerts and different things.

We have moved into Brookdale Valencia. I'm impressed. We have not had one meal here that we couldn't handle. This is very good. They have transportation, too. We had a situation where we needed to go to the store and they made arrangements because it wasn't a day that you can go to the store, and I was impressed by that. All of the staff members are good. They have a pool and a hot tub, which are important to me. The people are very friendly. The staff is very helpful, too. When you call, they'll come within 10 to 15 minutes, which is good, but they have to finish whatever they're doing first for someone else, which is reasonable. Food is excellent. The place is very good, very wonderful and very easy to get around. It is cheaper than what we were paying before and is 100% better.

I saw Brookdale Tramway Ridge twice. I liked it during the day, but during the evening hours when the main staff was gone, I didn't care for it. The rooms seemed nice and clean. I saw the exercise room, the outdoor space was nice, and the dining area seemed pleasant. The food was good.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Albuquerque

Medicaid in New Mexico

New Mexico’s Medicaid managed care program is called Centennial Care. The community benefit portion of this program provides seniors with access to assisted living services, as well as providing financial assistance with other health care costs such as medical and dental care, nurse visits, nonmedical transportation and physical, speech and occupational therapy.

To be eligible for this program, seniors must:

Be 65 years of age or older
Have a monthly income that doesn’t exceed $2,250 or assets that total less than $2,000, excluding the senior’s home
Reside in New Mexico

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living

Older Americans Act

Seniors living in Albuquerque may qualify for state funding under the Older Americans Act: a federal law that provides the state with funding that’s managed by Area Agencies on Aging. Some AAAs may use their funding to provide financial support to seniors who require help with the cost of assisted living or home care. Depending on the senior’s income, the full cost of services may be covered under this program or services could be subsidized.

In order to access funding under the Older Americans Act, seniors must be 60 years of age or older, be legal residents of New Mexico and require daily supportive care. There are no income or asset limits in place for this program, but seniors who are most in need of assistance are helped first.

Optional State Supplement

Seniors who receive supplemental security income (SSI) from the federal government may be eligible to receive an optional state supplement (OSS). OSS benefits exist with the intention of helping individuals who reside in long-term care facilities pay for the cost of room and board. The benefit is calculated based on the senior’s income and needs and paid out at a maximum of $100 per month. To be eligible for OSS, seniors must be receiving SSI benefits.

Elderlife Bridge Loans

Elderlife bridge loans are intended to help seniors pay for the cost of assisted living and other types of long-term care while they await permanent funding. Bridge loans are paid directly to the senior’s assisted living facility and are paid back in low-interest monthly installments by the senior and their cosigners.

Seniors may apply with up to six cosigners, which can increase the likelihood of approval. Seniors can apply for an Elderlife bridge loan by contacting Elderlife Financial Services directly.

Long-Term Care Insurance

Long-term care insurance policies are available to older adults who want to prepare for the possibility that they may someday need an assisted living or nursing facility. Insurance policies vary in price depending on the coverage, provider and policyholder’s age and health history.

Although the eligibility requirements for long-term care insurance vary between providers, most require a policy to be purchased before the need for long-term care exists.
