I visited this facilityReview of Sentinel Pointe Retirement Community

Sentinel Pointe was very nice, but it was more independent living, so we'd have to pay for extra services, and I'm not quite sure that would be enough for my sister. We were happy with the tour though. The staff who toured us around was wonderful, she was very knowledgeable, kind, and very professional. We looked at a one-bedroom and a studio, and we very much liked the studio and the way it was set up. They have a theater, but I don't know about the activities. We didn't go into that so much. It would have met all our needs, except we needed more care.

My parents are here. They're not providing care, it's an independent living, but everything seems to be going well and they seem to like it. They have just moved in a few days ago, but so far, everything has been great. They love their apartment. It's big enough for them. Everything is great. Everybody that I've talked to has been very nice. I don't think my parents have been dealing with a lot of people just because they have been staying in their rooms because they just moved in and so they're quarantining themselves. However, people are bringing in their meals and they seem very nice. They said that the food has been good, too. They have activities but my parents haven't taken part in anything. It's a really nice, beautiful place. The staff is wonderful. It's very clean.

I'm here at Villa Maria Retirement Community and it's wonderful. The staff is very friendly and caring. The food is fine. I'm very satisfied. They have card games, bingo, an art class, and exercises. The assortment of activities is good. The building is beautiful, and the dining room is gorgeous. My apartment is nice, everything is fresh and in good shape, and carpeting is clean. However, the hallways could be improved upon.

Sunrise of Cascade appeared to be able to meet the price as far as the money that my mother has available without going over too much. Then they had someone go out and evaluate her but she was in a bad mood, so they came back and said it was not good, and they doubled the price per month right then and there. The place was beautiful, and the residents seemed to be happy. It looked like they had a lot to offer them, but tThe problem was that they wanted to put my mother in memory care. I was excited for her to have her go to some place like that, but they did that and then they told me at the end of the year, it was going to be another jump height in finances. Well, the place was very clean and beautifully decorated. They had lots of activities to offer. The staff was very easy to work with. The rooms were very clean.

My mom moved into Sentinel Pointe Retirement Community. It's the closest to us, and has a comparable service to other places. The cost is a little more to put us in this location. She's just getting the first level of care like feeding, meals, and help as needed. She's in independent living and she just goes down for breakfast. For the size, they're laid out very nicely and in a nice complex. What stood out to me was how clean it was and how friendly the staff was. They have all kinds of little games they can play, they have a beauty shop where ladies can get their nails done, and they have a barber shop where you can get a haircut. They have lots of activities you can do during the day like card games. The staff is very interesting, nice, pleasant, helpful, and endearing. The lady that's helping out my mother is very compassionate, so it's all working out very well.

It was a very nice place. They were very accommodating. The rooms looked very pleasant and comfortable. I didn't see a lot of the residents that particular day. There were some that were playing cards. The lady that I was with was very helpful.

Sentinel Pointe Retirement Community has the most caring group of people. Everybody knows everybody, and even the maintenance workers are fantastic. My mother-in-law feels that she's a person, not just a number. The food there is great and all the social activities that they do are just fantastic. She really likes it there. The room that we chose is a very spacious studio with wonderful windows that overlook the patio where they do concerts and barbecues for the residents. They have a library, a beauty salon, and a cafe. The dining room is open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and you can order whatever is on the menu. If you don't like what's on the menu, you can also order something different. If you come in late for breakfast, you can still get breakfast. They don't have a cutoff time for meals. The marketing people are wonderful. Jim gave us all sorts of advice and tips. One thing they did during the first week was they paired Mom with a resident to show her around. The place is so clean and it doesn't have any smell to it. It's like a hotel. They have a big band that comes in and plays for them. They also had a banjo player come in one time. They have movie nights and a bus that takes them shopping.

It was very friendly, clean, and seemed very pleasant. The apartment had a little kitchenette, a living room, dining room, and a bedroom. They had a calendar of events that was going on for the month and they explained some of the outings they have available.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Grand Rapids

Medicaid in Michigan

Medicaid is a government-run health insurance program that provides health coverage to low-income adults, people with disabilities, elderly adults and other groups of eligible Americans. Each state operates its own Medicaid program, so the benefits available to Medicaid recipients vary from one state to another. Michigan Medicaid covers a variety of necessary services, such as doctor visits, emergency services, home health care, nursing home care and physical therapy.

To qualify for Michigan Medicaid, seniors must be U.S. nationals, U.S. citizens or permanent residents who live in Michigan. They must also meet certain financial requirements. Single seniors need to have a pretax annual household income of less than $16,146 to be eligible. The maximum annual income for a couple is $21,892.

Seniors who are interested in Michigan Medicaid can apply through the state’s online portal, MI Bridges. The state also offers a paper application for seniors who can’t apply online. The completed application needs to be mailed to:

Seniors in Grand Rapids may be eligible to receive long-term care services through the MI Choice Waiver program. This program is for low-income seniors who meet the medical criteria for nursing home care but choose to receive care in their own home or in an assisted living facility. Participants in this program can access all of Michigan Medicaid’s basic services as well as certain long-term care services. These additional services are unique to the waiver and include private duty nursing, nonmedical transportation, medical supplies, chore services and community living supports.

While the MI Choice Waiver program is part of the state’s Medicaid plan, it’s not an entitlement program. There is a waiting list, so interested seniors should apply as soon as possible by calling the Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan, Inc. at (616) 456-5664. This agency can also provide more information about the program and answer questions.

Other Financial Assistance Programs for Assisted Living

PACE

Seniors in Grand Rapids may be eligible to receive assistance from the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly. This program finances all services covered by Medicaid and Medicare, such as hospital services and nursing facility services, but it does not include room and board in assisted living facilities.

To be eligible for assistance through PACE, seniors must meet Medicaid’s long-term care eligibility criteria, which is determined based on a medical assessment. They must also be able to safely live at home, in an assisted living facility or elsewhere in the community. Seniors who are already enrolled in a Health Maintenance Organization or the MI Choice waiver aren’t eligible for PACE.

Optional State Supplement

Seniors who receive federal Supplemental Security Income benefits and live in an assisted living facility qualify to receive additional financial assistance from the state of Michigan. This optional state supplement can help cover the costs of assisted living care. The maximum OSS for a single senior is $179.30 per month, while couples are eligible to receive up to $743.60. Seniors may also receive a monthly allowance of $44, which can be used to pay for clothing and other personal needs.

To qualify for OSS, seniors must live in an assisted living facility and be eligible for SSI benefits. Limited income and limited resources are the main eligibility criteria for SSI. Seniors need to have a countable income of less than $750 to receive SSI benefits, and their benefit amount is calculated by deducting their countable income from the maximum benefit amount ($750). Countable income covers many types of income, including wages, Social Security benefits or cash from relatives. Resources, which include assets such as cash and personal property, are limited to $2,000 for single seniors and $3,000 for couples.

Seniors can make an appointment to apply for SSI benefits by calling the Social Security Administration at 1 (800) 772-1213. This appointment may be over the phone or in person. Seniors can also visit their local Social Security office to apply for these benefits.

Veterans Aid and Assistance Program

The Veterans Aid and Assistance program may help senior veterans in Grand Rapids pay for the cost of assisting living care. Seniors who qualify for the Aid and Assistance program can receive an additional monthly payment on top of their VA pension amount.

This program is available to veterans and survivors who are eligible for a VA pension. They must also need help from another person to perform certain daily functions, such as bathing, dressing or toileting. Seniors may also be eligible if they are legally blind or have a disability that requires them to stay in bed. Seniors who reside in nursing homes may also qualify.
