I really liked Bickford of Crystal Lake. It was beautiful and I liked the activities they had. I liked everything they offered. The staff member who showed me around was awesome and great. The place felt homey. The bar and the food were nice. I highly recommend it.

We recommended Clarendale of Algonquin to our parents. The lady was very informative and helpful. We really liked the facility. We got a lovely tour of the place. The rooms were small. They have movies, they have activities, and they can go in and out. They do the laundry, provide meals, housekeeping, and transportation.

My father moved into the assisted living level of Clarendale of Algonquin. It's a very nice community. We've had some good staff members and some bad ones, but most of them are friendly. His room is very nice, clean, it's well lit, and there's a lot of room for him to move around. The grounds and location are good, it's well-kept, and clean.

The woman who took us around Three Oaks was so nice and very thorough. She completely listened to us as far as the history of my mother-in-law and what was going on. The facility was beautiful. They had nice reading rooms everywhere and a library. The dining room was gorgeous. Everything about it was nice. They showed us the menu. They had plenty of fruits available as well as drinks.

We selected Bickford of Crystal Lake for my mother-in-law. It's small, homey, only one floor, and only 37 patients, and that's what she likes. The food is fantastic. They're all home-cooked meal. Everything you can think of, they have it there. They have a salon, a spa, manicures, a dining room, fireplace room, outside patio that is gorgeous for fires and barbecue, a sitting room with a big TV, movies for older people like I Love Lucy and generation movies, and a movie room. It's just a really nice place. It's expensive, but that's because it's assisted living. The staff are all just wonderful people. It just fit her perfect. They went to Lexington where my mom was, they talked to her, the nurse came in for the assessment and stayed with her all day, and she just really enjoyed them. She likes her room, she likes where she's at, and she's making the transition well, and I can be there every single day for her. They keep them entertained and they do everything for them. They have outings and ice cream socials. They just love it. What sold me was when I came in to take a look, we had lunch together. Nobody offered lunch or food anywhere else.

We really like Sunrise’s program. They charge about $200 a day including memory care. They don’t charge anything extra for memory care. The facility is very nice with a lot of big public spaces, lot of grounds, and gardens. The only drawback to them was they're really only equipped for single people. There were bigger spaces, which was nice for 1 person. It was only 550 sq. ft., and the bed was going to be in your living space. For just my wife, it would be my choice, but at this point that's not what we’re talking about. We actually met with the activities directors. She has been there 16 years, so she knew the place very well. They have tons of activities for people.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in McHenry County

Medicaid in Illinois

McHenry County seniors who meet income guidelines may qualify for free or low-cost health insurance coverage through Illinois Medicaid, which is called Medical Assistance Program. This program is an entitlement, meaning that all eligible applicants will receive benefits, and it may cover home care services and adult day health care services. While Illinois Medicaid does not pay for services in assisted living establishments, shared housing establishments or sheltered care facilities, there are two waiver programs that may provide coverage for these services. These programs are outlined below.

To qualify for Illinois Medicaid, applicants must be:

  • U.S. citizens or legal residents
  • Residents of Illinois
  • Individuals with a monthly income of no more than $1,041 and less than $2,000 in countable assets, or
  • Couples with a monthly income up to $1,409 per month and less than $3,000 in countable assets

Those who do not meet the income and asset requirements may still qualify for Medicaid through a spend-down program called the Medically Needy Pathway or through Medicaid planning, which is for those who are unable to afford their medical bills.

In addition to standard Medicaid coverage, applicants may be eligible to have their senior care services covered through two home and community-based waiver programs.

The Supportive Living Program pays for services received in an assisted living facility by low-income individuals who qualify for nursing home level care. While this waiver does not pay for room and board in an assisted living facility, it does cover services, such as personal care assistance, social and health activities and medication management.

To receive financial assistance through Illinois Medicaid, seniors must apply through the Department of Human Services website or call (800) 843-6154 and obtain a needs screening through the Department on Aging
