It was a very good place and everything was fine, but we didn't like the food. The one-bedroom apartment was beautiful but small. The staff was very informative, very nice, and very kind.
Frustrating to deal with the admin responsible for the staff's training, to find out details of Brookdale's costs of services in general. Not enough caregivers and inconsistent care. Response time to pendant frighteningly slow. Seems like a disconnect between the staff and the people who oversee them. Hard to get a straight answer from the people in charge. P/T care was outstanding. Patient management in SNF side a bit ragged, but the therapy was excellent. Hated to see the resident move back to A/L with home health. Care reviews happen after complaints, with steep cost increases. Feels like penalized for speaking up. Indifference when comment on increase. Food is constantly complained about by residents. Menu appears pretty boring, food is passable, but the overall cost would lead one to expect a higher standard. Outings seem regular and varied. Residents who can't self ambulate aren't taken outside (ever) in spite of nice grounds. Beauty salon well run but limited with one employee. Marginal incontinence attention. Laundry services OK (standard problems of losing clothes if not clearly labeled or not).
Located within one mile of Bank of America, the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Wells Fargo Bank, and Torrey Highlands Park, this facility is within walking distance to many businesses and recreational outings. The facility is clean and well maintained. A few areas in the facility are a bit dated, and the décor is average. The facility is open, but during my visit, there was not a lot of sunlight coming in certain areas. Still, the facility is functional. The services include physical and occupational therapy, activities that include off site events, salon services, spiritual services, and housekeeping. This facility provides skilled nursing and assisted living services which allow residents who improve or need various services to receive them under one roof. This facility is moderately priced, and they do not accept Medicaid/Medicare. Also, if my loved one was here I would occasionally go to their therapy sessions with them to document their progress.
The food is very starchy. The cereal is made with water and the residents are given artificial cream to pour over the thick gooey mess that they call cereal. There are no fresh fruits or vegetables. The food is salty and there is greasy bacon and sausage at breakfast, There is no whole wheat bread. It takes forever to get help when a resident presses the button for help. There can are too few certified nursing aides and they have to many patients to care for. Substandard care is provided. My biggest complaint is with the physical and occupational therapists. They aren't concerned about the patients. They talk and joke among themselves. They make no effort to encourage the patient to try the exercises to get better. They are the worst and should all be fired. I reported Emeritus, Carmel Valley, to the 5 agencies listed in the UT San Diego Sept.8, 2013 news article on the abuses of nursing homes.
