There are two times of year you typically hear everyone talking about how they plan to kick their exercise regimens up a notch and start eating healthy: Immediately after the New Year, and in the Spring when everyone's gearing up to show off their best summer tans. In both cases, by the time August rolls around, much of that momentum has faded and we fall back into our usual routines.
August Wellness Month at Sunshine Retirement Living
But not at Sunshine Retirement Living. They've designated August as Wellness Month, with this year's theme focusing on "Wise and Wonderful." The company dedicates one month each year to fun activities and informative events that help residents learn new and better ways to stay active and healthy, emphasizing all lifestyle aspects including:
- Quality food
- Adequate activity
- Ample sleep
- A supportive community
- Time spent in a natural environment
- "Get Informed"
- "Get Fit"
- "Get Restored"
- "Give Back"
For the "Get Informed" part of the program, for instance, residents can get screened for blood sugar, get blood pressure checks, eye exams and hearing tests, as well as attend a number of lectures offering advice on fall prevention, proper use of medications, safe transportation options, the future of Obama Care and a variety of other informational seminars available at each local Sunshine Retirement Living community.
"Get Fit" with Wii Bowling, Ballet and More
Fitness, balance and mobility classes are part of the "Get Fit" component, with classes and exercises from the Arthritis Foundation as well as a number of fun offerings like line dancing, Wii bowling, ballet, and Senior Olympics. One thing's for sure: Residents at Sunshine Retirement Living communities will be anything but bored this month!
"Get Restored" with Tips on Essential Oils and Acupuncture or Take Tai Chi and Yoga Classes
Rest and rejuvenation is just as important as regular exercise, regardless of age. And that doesn't just mean getting more sleep. It means taking time for you, taking time to relieve stress and let the day's troubles fade away. That's why Sunshine Retirement Living has jam-packed its schedule with lectures on improving sleep and ways to reduce stress, along with plenty of hands-on activities like music therapy, hydration therapy, meditation and tai chi.
"Give Back" with Your Talents and Generosity
An enriched lifestyle isn't solely focused on you. While you should put YOU first, it's important to give back where you can. August Wellness Month at Sunshine Retirement Living offers residents opportunities to use their free time, talents and energy to give back to the communities they live in. Residents can participate in food and clothing drives, a Go Green Recycling Program, write letters to troops, or put their crafty skills to work to make teddy bears for the fire department, quilts for children, dolls for children's hospitals and plenty of other items that serve to brighten another person's day.
We don't know about you, but we'd sure like to be taking advantage of all those fun and information-filled activities at Sunshine Retirement Living this August! We know many senior living communities are taking steps and offering programs to help their residents live fuller and more active lifestyles. Tell us about what your community does to get involved or give back in the comments below.
