Each year, the Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA) recognizes outstanding performers among assisted living providers for excellence in human resources, sales & marketing, resident services, and operations & technology. ALFA’s 2010 Best of the Best Award Winners are comprised of 33 companies demonstrating excellence in these areas, some of whom earned recognition in more than one category.
Newton, Massachusetts-based Five Star Senior Living earned an ALFA Best of the Best award for its “Fall Prevention is Everybody’s Business” program. Five Star’s “Fall Prevention is Everybody’s Business…Not Just Clinical!” program focuses on the fact that falls can happen in any place at any time; therefore, all staff should have expertise in fall prevention.
Five Star created an innovative program that educated both clinical and non-clinical staff in fall prevention. The program kicked off with a two-day event for all nursing and activity directors, where each pair came up with a creative idea for preventing falls among residents. The 19 ideas were compiled into a binder, which each particpating team took back to their facility.
Since implementing the program, Five Star Senior Living reports a decrease in both the number of falls per month and the number of falls resulting in injury at participating facilities. Creative ideas for reducing falls included tips such as holding an all-staff scavenger hunt to identify falling hazards in the facility and holding “clinics” to assess eye and footwear safety for residents.
