The Rating system provides an indication of the overall quality of a senior living provider. Our ratings answer the question: How well does this provider serve its residents overall?

Why Should You Use the Rating in Your Decision Making?

  • It’s unbiased. Because ratings are calculated using a mathematical model, all providers are rated by the same standards.
  • It’s developed by senior living experts for non-experts. The model used to calculate the Rating was developed with input from dozens of senior living experts, senior living providers and consumers who have been through this process before you.
  • It’s easy to understand with three simple categories.

How Should You Use Our Ratings?

Our opinion is that one of the best ways to choose an independent living, assisted living or memory care provider is by spending time there. Our rating can help you decide which of the options nearby you should avoid altogether and which should you consider touring.

A word of caution: In many cases a community that has a lower rating might actually be a better fit for you or your family, than one that is higher rated. Every resident’s needs are unique and our rating is one of many factors you should be considering in your decision making.

The Rating system is our best judgement of the quality of a senior living provider using the data we were able to gather at the time. We do not visit providers ourselves before we publish a rating, so the rating is not based on our first-hand experience. Instead we rely on the opinions of local experts, government records, and consumer reviews. We do our best to ensure that the information we gather is accurate and truthful, but we know that in some cases it may not be and therefore we do not guarantee its accuracy. You should not use a rating on as your sole source of information. Before making a decision, you should consult other sources.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Rating System

What Is Included in the Rating?

The primary factors that are included in the Rating are as follows:

  • Staff: How good are the staff? Friendliness, staff turnover and professionalism are key aspects that are incorporated into our rating.
  • Facility: Is the home clean? Is it updated? Does the community have the amenities that people expect today?
  • Activities: Is there a full calendar of engaging, fun activities for residents?
  • Quality of Care: Are the services that are provided done so in a way that inspire confidence and trust?
  • Food: How good is the food? How well does the community accommodate special dietary needs?

Note: One thing our rating system does not take into account is cost. Just as on a travel site like TripAdvisor, more expensive hotels will often have higher ratings, as will more expensive restaurants on sites like Yelp. Here on, you might find that more expensive communities rate more highly. This should be no surprise as more expensive homes are generally newer, have higher budgets for building maintenance and services, have higher staff-to-resident ratios, etc. However, there are many highly rated communities in our database which are less expensive, but have rated highly because of the great setting and care they offer.

How are Ratings Calculated?

Our rating is much more than a simple average of the reviews that have been received for a particular business. The Rating is calculated using a highly sophisticated algorithm, leveraging innovative data collection techniques, and tapping the most authoritative sources of information to provide you a single, simple number to help you make a very big decision for you or your family.

There are three primary factors behind our rating system:

  • Opinions of Local Experts: We’ve recruited local experts to provide us their opinions about the senior living providers in their area. Our local experts spend their working lives in and out of senior living communities and span a range of roles including home care professionals, hospice care professionals, geriatric care managers, social workers, referral agents and more.
  • Resident and Family Reviews: Positive reviews from residents and their family members are a strong indicator of the quality of a senior living community. Our top-rated communities have a lot of “fans” who were willing to post a review.
  • Government Records: We have gathered the most up-to-date records from government sources to help us understand which communities have a great track record with regulators and which ones have fallen short of expectations.

Why Do Some Communities Not Have a Rating?

We attempt to provide ratings on as many providers as possible. In some cases where we have not been able to gather enough information about a particular senior living provider, we show “Unrated” on their profile page.

Can Providers With a Negative Rating Have Their Rating Taken Down or Their Profile Page Removed?

No. We do not remove profile pages if providers request that we do so. In addition, we will not remove a negative rating.

Can the Rating for a Senior Living Provider Change Over Time?

Yes. We understand that the quality of a particular provider can change over time, so we have designed the Rating to change as the nature of the information we gather about a particular provider changes.

As a Senior Living Provider, How Can I Improve My Rating?

You can improve your rating in three ways:

  • Claim and update your profile: By providing more information about your business we are able to make an assessment.
  • Provide professional references: The professionals your community works with know you best. These are the home care professionals, hospice care professionals, geriatric care managers and referral agents who are in and out of your community regularly. By providing us introductions, we are able to verify the wonderful job you do serving your residents.
  • Encourage residents and their families to post reviews: Positive reviews from residents and their families are a strong endorsement of the quality of your community. Encouraging residents and their families to post reviews of your community on can improve your rating.
You can get started improving your rating by first finding your profile page on where you will be able to update your profile page, provide professional references and get started getting reviews.
