Private Care Home

A private care home is a type of long-term housing available to senior citizens who are unable to live on their own and are in need of services such as:

  • 24-hour supervision
  • Assistance with activities of daily living
  • Meal preparation
  • Housekeeping
  • Linen laundering and changing
  • Assistance with medications

A typical private care home tends to be quite a bit smaller than a traditional assisted living community and usually does not offer as broad a range of medical services and support.

Private care homes are a good option for seniors who may be having difficulty performing daily activities simply due to age rather than serious health concerns and are looking for a small community feel.

Advantages of a Private Care Home

Private care homes tend to feel much more personal in nature than large-scale assisted living facilities. The intimate environment of a private care home allows residents to build stronger relationships with their neighbors and caregivers. This can only be beneficial to seniors, as a healthy, happy body has been shown to result from healthy, happy and well-developed relationships in life.

A private care home is also more likely to be located in a quiet residential neighborhood, often occupying a single-family home much like a boarding house would. This allows seniors living in private care homes to interact with the outside world much more freely, which is also very beneficial to overall well-being.

Private Care Home vs. Assisted Living

A private care home will typically offer the same or similar services as an assisted living community. However, private care homes are much smaller with more limited resources. Private care homes usually provide little to no medical services compared to an assisted living facility due to the number of occupants and the nature of their collective health.

Life at a private care home can also be somewhat limiting socially in that there are usually no more than 10 residents living there at any given time. Inter-personal difficulties between staff and/or residents can easily become amplified and cause stress. At assisted living facilities, it is easier for residents to be in regular contact with staff or fellow residents with whom they get along better simply due to a much larger resident and staff population.

Additionally, a greater diversity of people is usually found at assisted living facilities while only certain specific groups may congregate at smaller private care homes. Entertainment options such as exercise classes, parties and resident clubs are often available in abundance at assisted living facilities, while activity options might be much more limited at a private care home.
