2017 Best Fitness Blogs and Apps for Seniors

As seniors age, a healthy diet and lifestyle can be hard to maintain as nutritional needs and mobility abilities may vary. But it's important for us to maintain good health and stay active. There's a lot of useful apps and blogs to help seniors achieve this. We've come up with a list of some of the most useful ones for them to use. Our featured judge, Laura Cheney, and your votes helped us cast winners and finalists for this round of our SeniorHomes.com Best of Senior Living Awards.

Winners - Judge's Selection

Laura has selected 3 winners for both best fitness blogs and apps for seniors.

Top Senior Fitness Blogs

Silver Sneakers Best Fitness Blog: Silver Sneakers

Besides the brilliant title of this blog, it is so inviting to read. It is mostly content without a lot of ads. It offers brief and succinct advice, like “The Number One Exercise All Older Adults Should Be Doing” or “Prevent Falls In Your Home: The 6-Step Plan.” There are also videos embedded in the articles that are simple, clear and straightforward. You can access a lot of information quickly without wading through long articles.

Best Fitness Blog: Sixty and Me

I like this site because it is written personally by an older woman, Margaret Manning. She writes from her personal perspective and caters specifically to women -- so she can definitely relate! It isn’t another millennial professional dictating to you “how to live your best life.” This sight is not only educational but supportive. There is also a community aspect with opportunities to connect with other women.

Eldergym Best Fitness Blog: Eldergym

I love this blog! I will definitely be recommending it to my parents. It is written by Doug Schrift, a physical therapist and geriatric specialist, with the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. He is also an older gentleman himself so he understands senior issues from personal experience. He offers therapeutic exercises that are not only appropriate and safe for older folks, but highly specialized and catered to what older folks need most. He also provides some physiological explanation for why older adults struggle with certain issues and why certain exercises will help. His blog has videos where he himself is demonstrating the exercises. Friendly and soft spoken, he is easy to listen to and a great teacher. Try out his exercises!

Top Senior Fitness Apps

PocketYoga Best Fitness App: PocketYoga

Yoga has been shown to be a wonderful form of exercise to maintain flexibility, balance, strength, and mental alertness. This is a great app that makes yoga available to seniors. Although, they modify the practices for different ability levels, it is still mostly geared toward active seniors who can get up and down from the floor. It can be connected to a large computer screen or TV for easier use. There is no network connectivity required so you can access your yoga practice wherever you are. The images of people demonstrating the yoga are drawn—very life-like but not a particular person so you don’t have to worry about comparing yourself and being turned off because you don’t feel like a yogi. Give it a try!

Elevate Best Fitness App: Elevate

This app provides what it calls “personal brain training -- geared toward helping you stay sharp, build confidence, and boost productivity.”  Indeed, keeping our mental sharpness as we age is important. This is a great, simple, and fun way to do that without ever leaving your home! The games on the app are entertaining, engaging, and challenging at a level that is determined to be just right for you. It comes with many accolades including Apple’s Editor’s Choice Awards and was selected by Apple as the app of the year.  It is only $39.99 a year for a subscription.

Azumio Best Fitness App: Azumio

This app has many components that can help you quantify a healthy lifestyle. It is like your own personal health diary. You can track the number of hours you sleep, your workouts, steps taken, meals -- all in one place. It even has a component that will help you manage your blood glucose and measure your heart rate wherever you are. The app is easy to use and personalized for you. That means it will chart what is meaningful to you. You may not be a marathon runner, but you may be doing well on your hours of sleep and healthy meals! That’s worth recording. It helps you to see patterns in your life and to chart progress. There is nothing more motivating than that!
