Seniors considering a move to Portland retirement communities will find a large and diverse city that offers many benefits to its residents. The 29th largest city in population in the United States, Portland boasted a population of 583,776, according to the census conducted in 2010. Located near where the Columbia and Willamette rivers converge, Portland is Oregon’s most populous city. Incorporated in 1851, this city was occupied by Upper Chinook Indians before Europeans began to trickle into the area.
The city’s climate of wet and cool, sometimes chilly, winters and dry, warm summers makes it the ideal location for growing roses. Washington Park is west of downtown Portland and features the International Rose Test Garden, the Oregon Zoo and the Portland Japanese Garden. Seniors who are thinking about retiring to Portland retirement homes will be pleased to note that the city also offers an abundance of shopping options. Many large department stores are located in the downtown area. For a different experience that highlights the diverse cultures of the city, shoppers can enjoy the Portland Saturday Market. Multnomah County, which Portland is part of, offers five branch offices and nine senior centers through its Aging and Disability Services agency (http://web.multco.us/ads/locations). The senior centers, also sometimes called district centers, offer a range of services that are not found in branch offices. These include health education activities and programs, such as yoga, dancing and tai chi, legal aid counseling and meal services. Most of these activities have no financial eligibility criteria that must be met in order to participate. This hospital is ranked as high performing in the following specialties that might be of particular interest to residents of Portland retirement communities: cancer, geriatrics, diabetes, endocrinology and urology.
The city has emphasized public transportation options for its residents, including those living in Portland retirement communities. The bus system is operated by TriMet and offers service throughout the city while the light rail system, the MAX, serves as a connection between the suburbs and the downtown area. The western suburbs of the city are connected to downtown via the Westside Express Service while the Portland Streetcar runs through the South Waterfront District.
