I am/was a resident of this facility

I live in Whealdon Estates. I have an apartment on the back of the building, I have a patio, and a yard. I have a fence around my little yard. I have a dog, and I have a doggie door. I have three sons, and they all said, "Mom, you couldn't have a better deal than that." All the places I talked to, they don't have what I have. I'm very happy. I have not asked for one thing that they have not done. The staff is absolutely wonderful, they're very supportive of the residents, they all are very caring people, and they all are hard workers; they're just super nice people. They make an effort to have a variety of meals, and you have a choice. Now, things are a little bit different right now because of COVID but before that, we had like five choices for our noon meals. They have heart-healthy meals, they have light meals like sandwiches, and they have full meals, but you have a big choice. Now that we're still on lockdown from COVID, I think we have maybe two choices at noon and two in the evening, and you always have a hot meal. For breakfast, they have a variety of choices. I don't participate in a lot of activities, but I know they have a big variety. The activities director is very, very creative. She is always starting new things and having new things. There are a variety of activities. They have musicians come in, and they have people come in, and give you information like on insurance and investing, and all that kind of things. In a couple of weeks, someone is going to come in to give us our flu shot. They have a podiatrist that comes in. They have a beauty shop in the facility. They have a deal where after a year you pay, I think two extra months rent, and you can lock in your rate. Fortunately, I was able to do that. I have a studio apartment. I was amazed at what some of these other places charge, just absolutely amazed.

My sister lives in Sunrise at Siegen. The appearance is really good. However, they're having a whole lot of trouble right now maintaining their staff because they have a few staff members who have the virus. It seems like they have lost some of their better people because they're getting paid more at other facilities. Before the lockdown the activities were very good. They're very good activities with concerts and speakers. My sister was able to go to some of those. The food has been a positive thing. Overall, the place is really good.

I visited this facility

We had chosen Whealdon Estates until a medical problem came up, so we put it on hold. It is independent but we are going to have to hire someone to come with my relative. We like it because everything is in close proximity. The rooms are close. There is a sense of community. Everything is right there. Residents don't have to wander around the big place. For people with mobility issues and even with memory issues, it is ideal because it is very simple to get to the room, to the dining room and to the elevator. Everything is in close proximity. The staff is very helpful. The ones that we met were really helpful, considerate and very attentive to our needs. The grounds are very compact and very pretty. It is an older place, but the rooms are maintained. They have weekly programs two to three times a week, and they would take them out. They have on-site games and parties. It seems like they keep the residents pretty active. I didn't have the meal, but the dining room was excellent.

Williamsburg Senior Living Community was more updated and had a lot more going on, but it was above our price point. I met a lot of the staff. I was very impressed with them. They had a book club, movies, and a tremendous amount of activities because they are more geared to independent living. They also had a total assisted living wing, a reading room, and a private dining room. It is almost like a mall setting. It is beautiful and very unique. They have a lot more to offer and you get more for what you pay for. They don't offer an evening meal but offer evening snacks. The rooms are well kept and well maintained.

I am a current client of this provider

We chose Home Instead because they were willing to come to our house when other people had problems with the location. They offer basic services to my wife like bathing. The caregivers seem to be doing pretty fair. They usually email or call for scheduling and they're pretty good about that.

Whealdon Estates' staff is great. The place is older and could use some updating, but it's clean and that's the most important thing. It was also the most affordable one. My mom participates in games, Bingo, and also in crafts in the morning. Everyone there is just great and treat everybody really good. They treat us and my mother really good, and we absolutely have no complaints. Mama is happy there. We pay someone to bathe her three times a week and administer her meds morning and night. They offer three full, cooked meals a day. They give my mom little chores to do and she's happy with that because she wants to keep herself busy and from being idle and bored. She's never in her room by herself and always out doing things with other people. They also have musicians come there once a week or so. The housekeeping does a good job with Mama's room. We're all happy with that.

Whealdon Estates was very favorable. The food was good. The negative for me was lack of parking. It is not an issue if one is not driving, but I have a car, and the lack of parking was an issue. The community was very favorable though. At lunch I ate with some of the residents and I thought that was very nice. The person who helped me was very good; however, the place was a little bit older.

My friend has moved into Whealdon Estates. I'm not thrilled with where my friend is living, how she is living, and how they treat her. It is not a good experience. They don't care for people. However, because it is convenient to me, I kept my friend there. Other than that, I would have moved her. My friend was getting one roll of toilet paper for the week, and sometimes old peoples' bladders are weak, so they make accidents. Another thing is their food. I don't know how they cook the food because I have never been to the kitchen, but people always complain that the food has too much salt.
